I can see where the extra tab would help in supporting the plate. We did a guard that is completely bolt on. Now if a customer is prepared to weld onto the axle housing, then you can just as easily add a extra tab to our and attach to the axle and support it on the open end in an effort to prevent what happened to TOY350. We have not had any other reports of bolts pulling out.

Time will tell if this was an isolated case or a issue with the bolts not holding. Could have been a hole with compromised threads or any of a multitude of issues. Having a 2nd brace on the open end is definitely a good idea. There will be leverage if you start high centering the truck on the guard. From the pics in TOY350's thread it is obvious thad it made some pretty good contact with a rock. However the actuator was saved except for the pulled out bolt.

do you think that just a leg added so the plate rests against the axle would be enough? Just giving some support to help control flex on impact.

I could see a weld on tab for the axle housing with a bolt hole where a tab on the guard lined up so you could still remove it easily. (Maybe this is what you were referring to, wasn't sure).

Ok time for a side by side write up. Donate a set to 3 candidates who'd most likey beat on their rig and report back to the board.:p

Both products would appear quality enough for most on the board and considering the price of a new one - cheap insurance.

The current published list price is $839.04

Sure glad yer kidding. You are right? I thought it would be closer to 23 bucks. But, what do I know?

:flipoff2:

Guess I better order something up. The new diff you sold me didn't come with one. What's up with that?

How often are people damaging the locker actuator? I was thinking about getting the Slee AC Drier guard but maybe I need one of these first?

Brett, I broke mine without much effort--just one slip of the rear tires off a ledge. The rectangular flange that mates the actuator assembly to the third member was broken by the impact. The flange is cast, so it snapped rather than bending in a repairable fashion. I'm hoping to source one from a salvage yard, but no luck finding one thus far. If the weight of the vehicle comes down on that point, it's bye-bye locker. I'm certainly interested in purchasing or fabbing something to prevent a future occurence; the only question I have is whether either of the above guard designs would be able to support the dynamic load of a vehicle slamming down on it.

I had a fine mist of oil on the rear of the vehicle as we were heading home from vacation. I thought the transmission had had a little overflow out the breather while driving up and down the mountains; fortunately the wife recognized the smell as gear oil, or I'd have run the rear diff dry...

David,

Do you know what the retail price is for that guard? I couldn't find it on their website.

I can attest that the WWfab pece is pretty beefy.
Makes a healthy clang when dropped.
