This is quite surprising, but note that this was on the previous version of my tune (V49). I'm thinking that this thing is way too lean as it is adding a massive amount of fuel in the LT trim. Does this seem right?

This log file was normal city driving.

The ST is leaning the mixture (same log):

I'd like to see a wideband reading, if you are playing with spark a ton i'd bet you need to adjust fuel trims. You don't get a ton of info from factory narrow band o2s on overall trim. Almost ever tuner I've worked with wants a wideband before anything happens.

I’m not a tuner so that explains some of the problem. I’m still looking for the screws on the carburetor to adjust the fuel mixture and I am watching the tailpipe for black smoke.

I was concerned with all this and after I talked to the local tuner and got his cost estimate I ordered a comp & harness from Howell with a tune they set, havent touched it. 20 years on the LS now. 1 oil change, 2 spark plug changes, 1 alt & idler, keep sending it.

Are you driving your Cruiser on the road daily? I’ve been putting about 150-200 miles on mine every week commuting to work and another 2-300 on the weekends. I am also getting ready to drive to our cabin for Memorial Day weekend, which will be another 1200-1500 miles with a trailer in tow. I wouldn’t be concerned if the engine ran this way from the start but it is noisy and tired after my commute home

Finally, a post I can understand!
I might have some spare injectors around if that would help.

Thanks, Matt. I might be interested if they are ls3 injectors. I honestly think that my tune is not adjusted correctly for the larger throttle body that was installed. My injectors seem to check out fine according to the tuner, though I am wondering if they can keep up with the added volume of air.

I do a couple hundred miles a week just around town, a bit of freeway ( 10 MILES ), when really hot & worked hard the lifters might chatter a bit but thats all, I am always suprised when I pull into camp after aping the motor all day it just purrs like a kitten, it gets bounced off the rev limiter in low range, 3rd gear alot when on the trail. I have done long drives around Tahoe and what not, 3 - 4 hrs, no motor issues, tires getting hot & chunking seems to be the worst.

Uh, no, sorry, I was hoping you’d catch on that they’re diesel injectors and there’s only 6 of them :( and that’s why I understood the “turning the screw” post.

I’ll get it back to that state. I just drove for an hour after pulling the timing back a bit and it is not just pinging. The knock/loud ping is going away. I’m going to work with my tuner to see if we can add a touch more fuel with the original timing tables.

After seeing what DJ is putting into his dad’s Cruiser, I’ve considered swapping in a BMW diesel.

I pulled some more timing out of the tune, specifically in the portion of the tables where the knock was present, and I drove it for 2 hours with the camper in tow. All seems fine and it pulls the camper without any troubles. I think that I am good to head to the cabin next week. I’ll send pictures.

Now my next problem is to figure out why the gas gauge moves so fast… 🤔

I put another 500 miles on the Cruiser this weekend and it did amazingly well. The tune is dialed in perfectly for premium fuel. I’ll have to work on the low octane tables a bit to run right on mid grade fuel.

Here is a walk around video of the Cruiser far away from civilization.

1-Ton FJ40 Walkaround

Has anyone with a dual triangulated four length suspension ever installed an anti-wrap bar on their axle? I have axle wrap when reversing on the pavement and when I get into deep snow. My antisquat is around 87 and my separation between my links on the axle is about 10”.

Something is wrong. You should not have axle wrap with a 4 link

What’s moving and how much?
Like cl said, I can’t imagine any movement besides worn bushings or something, and that’d be obvious I’d think.

ETA I also assume it’s actually happening all the time, you’ve just detected it on pavement and snow?

I need to get a camera down there to see exactly what is happening. It feels like axle wrap but it is also worse when the clutch gets hot so I may be feeling the clutch chattering, but it feels worse in reverse.

I have always thought that it was the clutch but this weekend I felt something that seemed like driveline bind like you would get with severe axle wrap.

Can you set your drone up on the floor and watch the camera from your phone?
Do something to get video and make it happen.
Hopefully somethings not coming apart, axle wrap sounds impossible to me.
