Steering rack bushing options

Febest offers rubber bushings. No experience with them.

i saw those too. if they're the same manufacturers for bmw parts that i'm thinking of, i'll pass. and if the rack needs to come out to push them in, i'd rather just go with a new rack.

i did a quick search for whiteline bushings but couldn't find them, no prefrence in either poly brand, but reading this thread i'm starting to think maybe just get a new rack and not destroy my tie rods or balljoints.

I'll have to do some more reading up on this. i really do appreciate the input from everyone

so mine does move side to side when at full lock and tires on the ground, but what got my attention is that the passenger side washer wasn't straight and turned counter clockwise. so you're saying turned washer is something else?

No, not usually. ( I edited that post for clarity)
I'm saying turned washer is indication mounting bushing worn on 03-07.

Good or new steering rack bushing, washer is parallel with rack.
Typically Worn-out bushings have turned about 5% CW (more turn worst the bushing). (Clock Wise, as I stand looking down)
Turned CCW, I've only seen once. It was involved in PS front end side impacted (accident).

Another indicator is handling. With weak bushing and I find myself constantly making minor corrections to steering as I track down the highway. But this can be from other factors. i.e. No rake (caster), alignment, loose wheel bearing, bad ball joints, bad TRE, Tires tread, road condition, etc. So all must be considered.

Really bad rack bushings. I've seen where I turn a corner say LH and as tires straighten back out after turn, the steering wheel hung back to left. Then I turn right and steering wheel hangs right. This was in a 00 with 270K miles and oil soaked rack mounting bushings. I installed polys and all was good.

I know this has been posted but I cannot find it to save my life. What exists for rubber bushing replacements for the 03+ trucks? I'm really apprehensive about the poly as my truck is already pretty stiff. IIRC, Toyota doesn't sell them but there's an aftermarket upgraded rubber option?

You can buy them from Toyota, it's only that a rack also comes with them as a gift.

I get the rubbers from re-builder like CVJ in Denver. They changed their supplier sometime ago to someone from CA. I found a re-builder on ebay (Hint, from CA) that's delivers same ones to my door at a savings.

No OEM. Neither 98-02 or 03-07 rack and pinion bushing

They are OE (Original equivalent). The re-builders carry them like CVJ here in Denver.

I just did a set in and 06 with rack in place. It is the first time I know of, that this was down without taking out the rack. They are a two part bushing, which isn't so tall to make difficult for the room available.

03-07 rubber OE.

The OE for 2001 is a one piece for front and rear on driver side, just like OEM. The PS is a horse shoe shape that OEM is sold by Toyota.

Most just use ploy bushing as seen in this thread. They are two part and can be installed without removing rack. The old of 98-02 racks are easy to remove and no air tool is needed. But I've not tried installing OE rubber with rack in the vehicle. I'm concerned they are too tall, but should be able to get into place and ready to pull or press in. Getting a washer and nut on that is used with the pulling bolt as tool, may be difficult. The second issue will be too get lip to pop through opposite side you pull or press from. But it is certainly worth a try, since so easy to pop out old. Just be ready to remove rack if to frustrating. If it comes to removing rack, Hit me up. I've some important tips that can save you $$.

98-02 rack OE (OEM style) One goes in rear and one in front rack mount on DS. Notice they are identical and both have one lip thin the other thicker lip.

Also notice the bump outs. On the 03-07 it very clear these go front to back. I assume but don't recall in the 98-02 is the same. So watch as you remove your old ones.

You saw I don't like, Febest, they seem junky. I've send back every type bushing I've every bought from them.
