Started to bring my 74 FJ40 back to life.

The late nosecone is heavily ribbed, unlike the essentially smooth casting that's on there now. Combine it with class 12.9 studs & flanged nuts for the strongest possible setup.

Hoping to make CMCC, but it's contingent on getting new junkwagon assembled. Missing some part, can't quite remember...
I will have to keep my eye out for one.
I don’t see a horn. Need that to pass inspection.
I will have you a root beer or two waiting in the fridge for ya.

Well had a little setback. Parking brake cable didn’t stay on. So in the process of removing the drum I noticed I had way too much end play. It was pilling out about 1/4”. Hmm. Did I set the bearings too tight? What is going on. I have a pretty good memory and at 3am it hit me in dead sleep. I don’t remember putting a thrust washer behind the front bearing. But I didn’t have one left over. I checked the old case and bearings and shaft gears. Not there. Then I thought it could be my assistant. Sure enough it was. Found the washer across the garage under my grill. So I pulled the case last night and the top cover and verified it’s missing. I guess thing happen for a reason. If the park brake had worked I would have destroyed something. This is my assistant that just joined the family in January. Mid build so we was all up in my junk.

It’s hard to say what kind of animals my “storage” has in it. Kinda scared to find out. But I’m getting a storage container soon and all of it will get cleaned up. I will bring you what find.

I’ve done a few things over the last couple of years.
since I replaced the stock springs 20 years ago I never had a good shackle angle and was a rough ride. What 40 isn’t. When wheeling I would invert the shackles from time to time. One winter wheeling trip two years ago I broke the front top leaf and 90* bent the driver’s side. I also broke a riveted spring hanger on the front and back. More like ripped them off the frame. I went on the hunt for different springs with military wrap. I checked with a few different spring company’s and I realized I wasn’t ready to spend a small fortune on springs yet. I kept measuring springs I had laying around. I figured out that stock 60 springs with military wrap were the best length. Slapped a set on and they went flat. So pulled them and re arched them and took the lift spring pack and built a new set. Worked perfectly so I did the same for the rear. I moved the front axle up an inch so it’s about 4” up and moved the back about 4” also. Wheel base is right at 98”. It rides amazing and with 37” i can run down the highway at 70.

On the same wheeling trip I broke springs another truck lost its brakes and was rolling down a hill pretty hard so I quickly ran into the back of that truck. Didn’t do any damage to either truck other than some paint scraped on the 8274. So I built a bar for it. A couple of wheeling shots from this years SCC
