I love the archeology aspects of doing this for some reason. Here's another example. The right side rear window stuck down during my recent test drive. Pulling the door panel off it was obvious someone had been in there before, and they weren't overly careful. Unfortunately it was also obvious that despite looking pretty good on the outside, this door panel is also seriously water damaged and needs to be replaced, so I'm looking for door panels. Anyone have good gray 93 + panels for sale ? Anyway, here's the scene I found in the bottom of the door...

So.... That shouldn't be laying there, and it shouldn't have that all too familiar Toyota parts department label on it. Also under it and coated in years of grime is glass from a broken window.

The date is still legible, 7/15/96. So, in July of 96, before her third birthday, she had a shattered right rear window. There is no other obvious evidence of the door being repaired (and the glass in the bottom tells us this is the door it was broken in) so I would assume just the glass was broken out. May be a break in, but not sure why it would be the rear, so maybe just a baseball or other incident. The fact that the channel was replaced though makes me wonder if there was maybe some type of part or assembly issue that caused it. Unless the part was just cheap enough that the shop didn't want to pick glass out of the old one. Maybe that, since they didn't vacuum the glass put of the door either....

That is a familiar sight for me. That channel keeps falling off on my right rear passenger window. After numerous attempts to reinstall it, I disco’d the window.

Had a question on how well the Scheel-Mann gray seats work with the factory interior. I wondered the same before I ordered, so here are a few pics. This is in the garage under a mix of natural light, and LED in the garage and dome lights. I would say they don't "match" but they "go together" very well. Yes, my wife and daughters taught me that... @FFFbuff

Passengers side will be here Tuesday. Kids can pay their own way to college.

Those look great! Makes me want to ditch my new large seats if only for a moment

A little "before and after". Should have done something with this before now, it will probably need some paint. Even if it will buff out like the rest, it has lots of big chips...

While I'm stalling before starting to pull the transmission.... Wait, have I shared that I have to pull the transmission ? I'm behind on updates again. Let's concentrate on something positive first. I have had new Aisin aftermarket regulators with motors laying around for a while now, and recently ordered the left / drivers side window run. Actually removing the run was harder than expected because it was, well, it was harder than expected. It didn't want to budge at first. Everything else was easy though, door panel was already off.

Original vs new Aisin aftermarket regulator with motor...

New regulator and motor, new window run, glass edges cleaned and polished while it was out, regulator lubed with Molykote and the runs lubed with silicone / Teflon. I find this acceptable...

I’d recommend doing all that you might ever dream of doing inside the Transfer case now while it’s apart. I did the low range gears in 2017 before there was much talk about the under drive gears and I wish I had done the under drive gear set when it was apart the first time.

I had the work done at Valley Hybrids in Stockton, CA. When I spoke to them about it Georg informed me that the 80 case is over built and rarely ever needs new bearings. Just to be on safe side I had them replace the output bearings anyway.

If you do any wheeling harder than “over landing” the low range gears make a worth while difference.

Some people have made some very nice comments about the cleanliness of the frame / undercarriage on this truck. I very much appreciate those. I have also replied that it's all about the camera framing, and they didn't want to see the spots I haven't made it to yet. I wasn't kidding, I've been sharing the work I have done, not the work I haven't made it to yet. So, since I am an idiot who can't install a rear main seal correctly while a 1FZ is on an engine stand, and I had to drop the transmission to remedy the Exxon Valdez level event that was developing, I had the opportunity to clean up the transmission tunnel and frame rails normally blocked by that big marvel of bus engineering. Before getting in to this, I honestly and legitimately believed areas of the floorboards and transmission tunnel had a coat of some type of undercoating. I knew it was caked in years of leaked oil, but I thought there was a thick base of something else, something that was supposed to be there. I was so naïve when I was younger. Here's the transmission tunnel after hours with degreaser, a plastic scraper, a bucket of hot water, and several questions about the choices I have made in life.

Looks decent you say, but where is the nasty caked on oil superfund site looking before pic ? Well, I didn't get one. But, if you just turn your head a bit....

PXL_20220503_030857868.jpg

Even that is after a few soakings with degreaser and some scraping.

So, once I get the rest of that natural Toyota Rust Defense system off, I assume I'll be replacing it with some other coating that I only hope will protect the metal as well as years of dead dinosaur excretions have. Default choice is probably SEM rubberized undercoating. I'm also curious about the Raptor undercoating I'm hearing about. Thoughts ? I could always leave it as is and just keep an eye on it.

Either way, I'll have the pics above when someone pops up later with "he only undercoated it to cover up all the rust:....

I had the coating as well and it was rather random making me think it was a dealer added undercoating. I cleaned the frame only and chose to leave the body for now. I asked here if anyone had the coating and also got crickets back. When I bought the 80 at 40K it had it then and I thought is was from oil and grease but it never changed. It seemed to have done its job well and I was happy to move on from it on at least the frame, not sure what path I will take on the body if ever. Being in the high desert I'm not too concerned. Nice work on that tunnel, man, that's a lot of work....

Yeah, I still believe there is some type of undercoating in places. In those pics you can even see some of the beige seam sealer that looks more sprayed on than gooped on in a line. My inner wheel wells also have a ton of it. Funny story, the new inner fender mount washers are larger than the original. I have to grind out the undercoating / sealer to actually install the new _factory_ washers because they won't fit in the tunnel of sealer left when the old ones were removed. I'll have to find a pic of that.

Awesome work!!! I would love to have my windows run at the same speed.

Would you happen to have the associated part numbers and where you purchased?

In stock at Rock Auto right now.

Did the passenger side this weekend. Both sides work like a new car now.

While I am in there disease damn near killed me this time.... Every time I thought I was done and OK with cleaning the transmission tunnel, I got pissed at the grime staring me in the face when I turned my head a few inches. The progression of substance abuse was typical, gateway stuff like foaming or citrus based degreasers, then harder and harder. Engine degreaser, Purple Power, then finally I hit rock bottom and went to the old hard stuff. Gasoline. I was under the thing cleaning with gasoline, killing brain cells and risking life and limb. I didn't care, I wanted the oil and grease gone, I needed to see sheet metal. Until I hit rock bottom. Then I just didn't care any more. I could not make myself get back under the damn thing. I was miserable thinking about it. Oh, I had excuses. I have plenty of time, transfer case gears aren't here yet. Bearings are backordered.... But I really just didn't want to see it any more. I even bought another project. Money that should have been spent on bumpers, spent on a stupid little Honda scooter that I promptly took apart. But eventually, eventually I eased back in to it.

I know the drugs were hard core, because I Raptor lined my truck....

But just the bottom....

I think it came out pretty well. Too bad it's still just 1/3 of the truck, and it looks like total ass against the uncleaned areas, but I'm putting the tranny back in and walking away for now.

You are a glutton for punishment. Hats off to you for having the courage that I lack.

An air compressor and walnut shells would've been my method.

Maybe next time.

Something isn't right with you. At this point, you probably have some Stockholm Syndrome going on and now you're your own captive and have to finish otherwise the guilt of not finishing will eat you alive.
