Is a re-core enough cooling for a Chevy 350? Planning to do the swap, want to make sure I take care of my motor.

with a 350 you can put in a much larger aluminum radiator.

My rig never saw over 185 this last summer, even on the hottest days..........and I did not put my shround on yet.

This is an old thread but I just went through all this last month. I have a PO built 55 with a SBC in it and the radiator blew open after I boiled over thermostat). There was a unidentifiable copper/brass one that was poorly fab'd in. I had a hell of a time getting it out because it was obviously put in before the engine and trans was installed. My other problem was that I haven't seen too many 55s in their stock form and didn't know even if i had all the parts to go back to stock. All I knew was there was 6 bolt holes in the front 24.5" +/- apart and I wanted a radiator to fit that dim.

So after a while of striking out I saw that Summit had a 81-83 toyota mini truck with SBC conversion radiator for sale. Its a little narrow than i wanted but i just fab'd on a longer fin and it works great. Its aluminum 2 1" cores, trans cooler, and is good up to 500 hp. Although it was $410 I'm happy with it. I have a mech fan with no shroud for now and it will sit in traffic with the best of them.

How about a picture of it installed and the Summit part number please?

Do you want cooling improvement and performance? During a test, a Be Cool aluminum radiator was installed in a 1955 Chevy in about an hour and lowered its operating temperature from 220 degrees to 180 degrees F--even with the air conditioning going full-blast. Be Cool custom-fit aluminum radiators are designed to be a direct fit, and they feature 15 percent more cooling capacity than factory 4-core models. What's more, they can be used with all brands of antifreeze and are available in both standard and polished finishes.

man, wait for a guy to get home from work lol. yeah thats the one. here are the pics. I used 3/4in sq tube to space the fins so that the tanks did not rub on the rad support.

So having gone down this road and needing a radiator for my '79 FJ55, I thought I'd document my findings here. First, the Performance Radiator '79 Toyota Land Cruiser radiator is in fact for a FJ40 and will not work in the FJ55 (you guys knew that). Second, the Summit P/N380319 aluminum radiator is the perfect size but doesn't come with any mounting provisions so you'll have to tig weld on aluminum brackets ($$ in my neck of the woods). Third, I chased down the Plymouth Trailduster ghost and came up short but gained some documentation for the Knights. The radiator that supposedly is a direct bolt in is from a 1977 Plymouth Trailduster/Dodge Ramcharger with either the 5.2/5.9/6.6/7.2L V8 engine. There are 3 widths of radiator available for these trucks, you are looking for the 3-core with the 26 3/4" wide core. I was unable to confirm the direct fit, but was able to determine the 21 1/2" wide core was too narrow for the FJ55 (so this is the only wider option). My local Performance Radiator only had the latter in stock, and I didn't feel like paying $100 to have the other shipped from Houston w/o knowing it would work for sure. I ended up having mine re-cored which is definitely a more expensive option:frown:

Hope this info helps someone down the road ...

Good stuff Tucker! Thanks for finding.
I wonder if the inlet/outlet are in the right locations and sizes...

I'm on the hunt for a radiator. The current setup ran fair to poor on the 350, and Isn't cuting it with the 400.

I will try to find out if the trailduster option works, but it's pretty slim pickins in a town this small.

I think I still have a radiator out of a 75plymouth t/d in my shop in WY. I was under the impression that dodge used the same setup from 73-80, where did this rumor start?

Thanks! I've been looking for options for my '79 too. What about just brazing some supports on the summit one?

Thanks agin, ty

the summit one is most likely some funky new aluminum/plastic material that you can't modify. the one i got from griffin years ago was that, so the radiator neck couldn't be modified according to a few local rad shops.

if i remember tonight, i can get the dimensions. pigheads old radiator is behind the garage.

Cool.
I know there was a pic of a Piggy rad that someone took the time to put dimensions on...
I just wasted the lunch hour searching all my posts in the 55 section with the word "radiator" in them and came up empty.
Oh well.
Does anyone else remember that picture?

last batch, let me know if you need any more
