For those of you coming in on the 10th from Monte Vista, I was thinking of a very scenic optional 4WD route to Silverton. A very long time ago I took the family across Stony Pass (from west to east) in our '84 FJ60 on the way back from the Silverton area. The road heads up Stony Gulch from Howardsville, which is a little ways NE of Silverton and crosses over to the headwaters of the Rio Grande and down to Rio Grande Reservoir near the highway that goes from South Fork on US 160 to Lake City. It's about as straight a shot as possible between Monte Vista and Silverton, almost as short as the crow flies. Would there be any interest in a great 4WD adventure on the way to the SAS?

I'll unbox the Uniden CB that I haven't used since 1986 and check it out. First, the refurbished radiator needs to be installed tomorrow, along with lengthened wires from the coil/igniter to the FJ60 distributor. Then set the timing for altitude (we live at 7,240 feet) and I should be good to go. Assistance with the CB will more than likely be required.
I was wondering that myself when tuning mine yesterday. The lower channels seem to be used more so I tuned channel 10 so the lower channels work better.
The Firestik and Wilsons are easy as they usually have a screw on the tip for tuning. Whips I believe you cut the bottom end for tuning although I've never tuned one. The SWR meter I have is just a cheap Radio Shack version I bought 15+ years ago but it does the job.

Hopefully SAS #2 will have a grill badge or dash plaque of that quality. This being the inogural event and an extreme lack of sponsorship we are limited on swag.
There is no registration for this other than your own expense for getting there. We know the larger events have to start somwhere so this is our chance to get it rolling. Baby steps at first.
I am very pleased to have 29 of the most Iconic offroad vehicles attend a layed back get together in Ouray from all parts of the Country. We will have shirts, stickers for each vehicle and a common gathering place at the 4J campground. It is non profit so all expenses are paid up front to purchase said items. The cost of the shirts are less than $20 each and are unique to this first SAS.
All of Y'all (as I type this in Texas) that are on the list will recieve the shirt sizes requested. We will have a few extra shirts of common sizes available if you would like another.
Other than the arrival dates there is no real set in stone schedule. However, since this is a small group trail runs are easy to organize on the fly. Many of us know the area well enough to navigate without issue.
@mcguirejohnson and myself look forward to seeing each of you in Ouray in less than two weeks. Almost here guys. Thanks so much for pulling this thing together.

Well today was the last day I had to do all my fixes and get supplies (beer). Off to Chicago for work for a week. The local beer I'm bringing is Austin Beer Works Fire Eagle American IPA. I am also bringing some cheap Texas beers for the out of staters to try. They aren't necessarily good beers but Lone Star markets itself as "The National Beer of Texas" and Pearl says it's "Texas Oldest Brewery". I mainly drink Pearl because as a kid I saw it in my grandpas fridge all the time. Lone Star is my dads beer of choice. He and his friends softball team back in the 80's was called Enol Rats, which is Lone Star spelled backwards.

I know what you mean. I'm leaving 8/5 to go to Moab 1st so my leave date is coming fast. I believe that mechanically I'm good. Now I'm packing my roof rack etc. and doing some light wheeling around here to check the load etc.

A few minutes ago I took the '76 FJ40 for its first drive after the recent round of upgrades, everything seems to be in order. I had to replace the water pump and repair the radiator, and while I was at it I added an FJ60 oil cooler set-up and upgraded to an FJ60 electronic ignition system. The cooling system is good to go, but I still have two tiny oil leaks at the small oil pressure sender fittings. It won't be a big deal if I can't get to them before we leave for Taos and points NW a week from Wednesday. So far just a quick drive at 25 mph tops to the end of the subdivision at the tip of the mesa. Here's an idea of the scenery at the end of the street, looking north towards Taos and Colorado (from the 2011 movie Haywire):

My wife and I won't be able to camp, but have made reservations at the Comfort Inn downtown, about 0.4 miles from the 4J campground. I believe the FJ40's ready to go, I still have to run it up to speed on the highway and do the paper clip test. I brought our old CB radio up from the basement but still need an antenna. I'll create a separate post for some input on which antenna to buy.

Magnetic work well for a temporary set up. You might check to see if there is a travel center or truck stop near you. They keep them on the shelf and are very reasonable. WalMart has one also.
i will be bringing the SWR meter for tuning. I also have my handheld ham if anyone else has one. May be good for to have one up in front and and in the rear in case our convoy line is to long for CB.
