Version 1 was ok, but wasn't up to the task of holding all my spare parts on one spindle.

I just finished version 2. Split the weight onto two swing outs and used the heaviest duty spindles I could find. Also added a telescoping LED work/camp light. For more details follow the link in my sig line.

I am looking at something similar. I have a piece of square tubing the exact height of the stock rear bumper.

I was thinking about cutting out the rear bumber channel. Slotting the square tubing to fit over the rear frame members. Then I saw that I would run into the rear spring mounts.

It is so much easier to attach the square tube to the existing channel then start building from there. My rear bumper is in pretty good shape. If my rear bumper was rotted out that would be a different story.

This is my rear bumper made from 3/8" wall steel angle with `1/4" wall box tubing welded on. The lens protector is also 1/4" plate. The D rings would make a hummer feel inadequate. I use waterproof connectors to bring the electrics through the bumper wall.

there are places that still make them...look up "Blitz Can Carrier" i think they run around $60 and you'll need the tire carrier bracket i think someplace around $30 for that
