Ok. Now to break this all down

We left out early Friday. It’s about 7 hours to the trailhead.

I found that the trucks sweet spot for cruising is about 70-75. Anything over 75 and I am in the gas hard.

We stopped for a burger and then jumped in to some pretty hard trails.

I aired down to 20 all around

I had two trails planned. They were tight and rough. I had a few opportunities to really get the 70 to climb. No lockers so I was paying a lot of attention

The two trails were connected to some nice wire gravel and the 70 handles great at speed for such a short wheelbase

We made pretty quick work and picked out a good spot to camp and picked off the second trail and finished it about Sunset. 6 hours. 65 trail miles.

The trails in this part of the Ozarks get absolutely swarmed with UTVs and they love to wallow out the mud holes. Most have bypasses. Sometimes you pick wrong like I did

We ended up at Frog Bayou for the evening

Seven hours on the road, 6 hours on the trail.

So far. So good. Long day but good. No issues.

The next day the master of the Ozarks @REKCUT drove down to take us on some trails I did not have the tracks for.

We started out around 9 am.

You can see the size of the rocks he was dragging us over

Lots of standing water but very little water in the rivers and creeks

Very tight in places. Mostly due to bypasss and trees

7 falls was one of the destinations. We dropped in from the north. Not sure if my 70 would climb it south to north. Pretty steep and loose.

One final trail we went on was just UTV mess mud hole. I came around one hole and missed seeing this one and damn near turned over. Short wheelbases have very little forgiveness in these spots

After the mud hole trail, Thad split off and we went back a bit west to a nice creekside camp.

We ran about 30 miles in 10 hours. That s*** was rough.

Rough. I bent my side step. My rear bumper and at some point my fuel sender or gauge died.

Sunday we packed up fast and beat a thunderstorm.

I let Laird play through. He likes to drive 80 and I felt like a slow ride.

I hit the food truck at Lake Vilage

Crossed back over the MS

Hit a bridge out so I went off road for about 28 miles to bypass it

So here are my thoughts.

If you love wheeling an FJ40 then you would be above the moon in one of these.

Literally the only advantages of a 40 is cool factor and you can take the top off. Thats not an advantage to me. I dislike riding around without a top. It’s windy and noisy.

The rest….

The 70 steering is amazing. Only a Saginaw conversion on a 40 can match it.

Wipers and defrost that really work.

AC that’s designed properly for the truck. I kept it on all weekend. Truck ran cool and you don’t lose power.

The ScheelMann was clutch with as much seat time as I had. 850 miles in 3 days. If I had attempted that in a 40 I might be crippled.

Wheelbase.

The 90” WB shared with the 40 makes ducking around on these super trails look so easy. The 80 would take 3 backups and this thing would zip through.

The downside is climbing the couple of big ledges. It made it. No lockers but I had to pay attention. My 80 with lockers you can kinda fall asleep.

Also although I have it riding great. It’s not rough for a leaf spring truck but the 90” makes you wash around more than a longer truck. Side to side and back and forth. You know it’s short.

Overall that’s really the only negative and the fact that it’s not rough on the highway and on the fast forest roads makes it all good.

Oh, the final negative …. The trail MPG is 7 mpg. That’s wild. Consistent with the Saudi 1FZ 80 Jonathan has. He’s got dual tanks to compensate.

Highway was 13 mpg which is in line. It’s just the trail it drinks hard.

I do remember when I have a smoky start in the mornings, my carburetor guru turns a screw in the carburetor to make it less thirsty. But I really don’t know which one

Jonathan’s truck uses the same off road. It’s just the nature of the carbureted 1FZ The road usage is normal.

Thats why Toyota gave you guys the 5 gallon door can!

Like the F engines before it, the 1FZ engine is powerful but thirsty.

The 70 Series corrected a number of issues the 40 Series has. Namely, power steering, heating/AC and suspension. The attention put into these and other details is amazing.

I had the opportunity to take the Short E 70 for a quick drive a couple of days ago. This is what I wrote in an Instagram post "

The FJ40 is the iconic Land Cruiser, which was discontinued in 1983 or 1984. Some dispute about the end date. Toyota replaced the FJ40 with the 70 series, which was unavailable in the US. Thanks Toyota <sarcasm>. This is an example owned by @89nolder imported from Saudi Arabia. It has a 1FZ engine and 5 speed transmission. I was able take a drive this afternoon and it is sweet. Solid truck that carries on the Land Cruiser heritage unlike the current US offerings. #landcruiser #fj40 #fj70 Had to do the Grogan RR jump"​

The juice of the 1FZ can be felt when you mash the pedal and the engine whistles. Transmission shifting has a different feel than with a H55F, more like a 4Runner. The Dobinsons suspension is firm but not overly stiff, the railroad bumps were absorbed without jounce. This is a short wheel base rig and that is evident through the suspension.

Well done Toyota and too bad the US market did not get this model.
