Does 5 hours sound reasonable? Claimed the 'entire top' including intake manifold had to come off the engine to get to the starter...Not super mechanically inclined, but $1000 to replace a starter seems a bit nuts....

The starter is in a tough place, under the air intake. 5 hrs sounds about right

The actual time will probably be like 2-3 hours, but the way shop rate billing works, 5 sounds right.

^^^^^^ Spot on. Job takes about 3 hrs. But you know they are going to break the heater Tee's in the process (if they have never been changed)...so there's another hour. ;)

Thanks all! I'll break out the checkbook.

Where are you located? See if someone on the forum near you can do it for you for less, I do sidejobs for cruiser around me all the time.

I have documented in my thread if you want to tackle it. Not hard just a pain. I was in plank position the whole time. I’m a fairly small guy 5’5 so not too bad.

Not a hard job if your tall with long arms:) Just takes some time and of coarse the cost of the alternator...

^^^^^ Oh man....did you put a hex on him and now he's got to do the alternator too. ;) That wasn't very nice. :)

I don't know what the book time is but I'm sure most reputable dealers go strictly by book time. Well I know of atleast 1 in New Orleans lol. If you didn't try Lexus/Toyota, it doesn't hurt to get another quote. Lexus would offer a loaner at no cost so take that into consideration. Also check into the warranty.

with the info on this forum... it's not a hard job... for the quoted price you could do it yourself and BUY a full new set of nice tools... I'm old and slow and @6ft i have to stand on a chair i found works well... or your other option is to remove both front wheels and drop it down on the ground... I do like to remove the hood struts and with a tie down strap (or rope) pull the hood up almost 90 degrees... lets you see better and climb all up in there... for a first timer doing it.. and with info here it might take you 6hrs next time you could do it in 3.. i've done it in an hour when I installed a new engine and left the starter wire off of it.. (remove and replace manifold) the cool thing is it seems every hose and wire just kinda falls back into place on these engines.. ver few will go anywhere but where they need to...
good luck
p
