OK. Maybe this is another way to look at it:

Count the number of things (connections) that are DIFFERENT from each vehicle, or in other words, things that would need to be modified to either harness (with all components appropriately swapped, where possible):
To the FJ harness I'd have to graft/swap: starter, alternator, glow, wiper motor, assorted idiot lights, EDIC, water sensor/sedimenter, ___________ (fill in the blank, I am out of stuff I can think of).
To the HJ harness I would have to graft: windows (4), mirrors (2), side marker lights (4), headlights (2), ___________.

Another consideration: The FJ harness is 7 years younger, never saw saltwater and is cleaner.

I don't give a Rattus norvegicus's sphincter ani which one I use, I just want to do which one is easiest and best.
 
Kinda looks like the HJ harness would be easier ...ehh .eehhh ;)

Just thinking outside the box a bit.

Run both harnesses, off of dual batteries. All the stuff from the FJ list you made would run off of the secondary battery, as well as anything else you want to be able to use. Run the HJ stuff off of the main\starting battery.

Heaven help anyone that has to work on it besides you b/c it would be tough to map out, but it may work.

hey, I searched the thread but did not see whether your HJ was 24V from Canada?

I would say it would really be easy to then run the items you listed from the 62 (since it is all 12V) from the HJ harness..... you can then have one harness with the knowledge that you spliced only the 62 specific items and the 2H has everything you know it needs from the factory.... JMHO:grinpimp:

Tofu, when you fitted the 5 speed did you move the crossmember mounts forward on the chassis? how did you get them off the chassis without destroying them?

Thanks, i am in the process of converting from A440 to "Turbo 400 with mounts for a h55" the crossmember needs to moved forward about 10-12 inches

PS now you are this far into the wiring my vote goes with lowtides recommendation although either harness will work, transfer everything from sheila and use the hj harness, electric mirrors and windows are over rated:rolleyes:

Sorry for the long ass delay fellas. This project has definitely been back-burnered, sadly. I'll pick it up again when I take off 10 days in three weeks...

The crossmember mounts were held on with four grade 8 bolts, not welded to the frame...no problem relocating them. I just had to drill new holes in the frame. The 62's crossmember was held on with bolts going through the BOTTOM on the frame and into threaded holes, but I just moved over the HJ60's crossmember which bolts to the inside rails of the frame. When I rebuild my transfercase (again) I'll sleeve the crossmember frame holes. I drilled all the way through the frame (had to buy a right angle "close quarters" drill, the cordless Ryobi. Really happy with it...

After much consultation, I am 100% convinced the FJ harness is the way to go.

I have no idea how long the little feller was in there, but based on what I know of avian biology, probably 4 or 5 days until dehydration. It was in the back laying on top of a pile of parts. Poor bastard.

I've lost momenum, and Tofu has seen less of me in the past few months than I'd like to admit. when I pick it up again (hopefully soon and with help), I'll be back in it full swing...
 
Help, please

As you can see from the last post, this project has stalled out so badly that I have had to remove several birds nests from under the bonnet. Seriously.

However, based on the recent news I got from my Mercedes mechanic, my wife's daily driver ('83 MB 300TD, 330,000 miles) is about to be put up for sale with a full list of known issues approaching $3,000. Nothing catastrophic, just a long list. The vehicle should still be on the road another 20 years with this motor in it. I'm putting about $1,600 in it right now. In case you're curious, that $1600 is for all four brakes (and hoses, sensors, flush, etc.), front lower control arm bushings, and a steering box reseal. These were my first priority issues to contend with so that it can be driven safely for a little while longer, but we're done with it. It'll still be worth a solid $1,500, especially with the ~$5,000 I've put into it in the last three years. I just want my wife and two little kids in something more reliable and this should be someone else's project...I have one already and am drawing the line. So, she'll get my daily driver, the '87 MB 300D. If I were not such a bloody do-gooder and actually made a decent living, I'd keep the vehicle and put $5,000 into it and make it perfect. And I do not play the lottery or have dying and wealthy relatives...so the bullet will be bitten.

Thus, I MUST get Tofudebeest back on the road in the next few months.

So, I'm calling for help to all those willing and able within a reasonable distance of Gainesville, FL. I've put in some calls and if lucky, I'll be able to at least knock off some of the items from the "to do" list. Regardless of what I can get done soon (with help or on my own), I am looking for a solid mechanic who would be willing to adopt this project and get it to mechanical (nevermind cosmetic) completion before the end of the year. I'll pay good money and have on hand virtually all the parts needed to finish. Wiring expertise would be essential. I'll entertain all reasonable offers but only if you can provide good references and are willing to come and check the project out first hand on your nickle.

I am game to help turn a wrench and provide some assitance, as my schedule permits (and depending on where the truck will be), but I am, as several Mud members and friends can attest, a real noob and likely more of an annoyance than help. If I learn nothing more from this project, that will be unfortunate, but my priority is to get it back on the road asap. This is my first wrenching effort and with a 2 and 4 year old, I simply do not have the time or luxury any longer to make slow (painfully slow) progress as I learn.

My dream: Someone will say "I'll do it for $1,500 plus that Mercedes wagon, and I'll have it back to you by the end of September."
Alternative dream: Someone with stupid money will come along and drop $13,000 on me for it. DO NOT LAUGH...that's what I owe (I financed the $8,500 to buy Sheila and the other $4,000 was used to pay some bills). The loan is on Sheila's defunct title, not Tofudebeest's, (the title for which still sits in my desk drawer, not yet recorded in my name).

I am looking for some one with Land Cruiser experience to finish a diesel conversion project on my lhd FJ62.

The FJ62 has a 2H diesel engine installed.

The wiring and fuel systems need to be completed. A complete rhd 2h harness is availible as well as the diesel specific fuel system.

The vehicle has been sitting for years, so ALL systems will need to be check over for safety.

The engine and transmission are in excelent condition, but the xfer case will need to be rebuilt.



I have an older Mercedes wagon that needs work that is availible for partial trade for labor
