SAS6 is in jeopardy for Maureen & John McVicker.

Wheeling yesterday & lost 3 of 4 bolts on the rear U joint of the FRONT drive shaft. Heard the drive shaft flopping around, going slow so came to stop in 5-10 feet…BUT the drive shaft flopping around hit and broke a part on the T Case called ‘Front Drive Shift Fork Shaft’ per FSM with the arrow pointing to it In the 1st picture.

Do not have the time to source part, drop the t case, disassemble, install part, reassemble & reinstall the t case before my leave date of 7/29.

Once I get into 4H I can shift back and forth between 4H & 4Low, but with the broken shaft I can’t shift into 2H. So….fellow SAS3 attendee @2mountainfish, Jerry Fie has suggested the following remedy. I will try it later today… redneck but if it works I think we can make it to SAS6.

Here‘s the thought: Tap, tap, tap the broken shaft in & it should go into 2H. When I need 4wd I will get out, go under the truck & pull the shaft out with some vice grips. I can us the shift lever to go back & forth between 4H & 4Low all day. When the trail is over, get back under the truck & tap, tap back into 2H. Then I can do a proper repair after SAS6.

I won’t be able to get out there until later today to try this out but as redneck as this is, do you think this will work…or put another way, do you see any reason why it won’t work? Appreciate your comments.

The hammer and vise grip to disengage and re-engage will 100% work. Shifters just make shifting more convenient.

I'd only do the hammer and plier fix on either end of the road trip, and even that is a maybe. I can't recall if you have chromo birfs, but assuming you don't: I'd just unlock the hubs and send it. There won't be any harm done to any driveline parts with factory birfs.

I hate to hear that, John. Wouldn’t be the same without you guys. Is this a part we can source from Brandon when we stop at Classic Cruisers?

Oh nooooo!

What @Zjohnsonua said. You can make it! Surely someone can bring one of you can’t get your hands on one in time. That shaft is a piece of cake to swap out on the 40 cases, but looks a little more involved on yours.

Thanks Zack @Zjohnsonua so are you saying to tap,tap into 2 wheel drive only when leaving for Ouray and leaving for home.

And while @ KOA leave it in 4H with the front hubs unlocked and drive to & from the trails in 4H with the hubs unlocked? Have stock Birfs.

And I just went and tap tapped but the shaft did not move. Haven’t gotten mid evil yet with the hammer. Think it’s safe to get a bigger hammer?

Yes possibly. Not sure how common these Front Drive Shift Fork Shafts are, but if Brandon has one it would be great if you guys can pick it up.

I will pay when you get to camp or with Brandon over the phone. 😊😊😊

You can book a specific site. However, now it’s a $20 fee if I recall correctly. Atleast that’s what they charged me a few weeks ago.

Ran Fordyce Creek last weekend. Super tough trail and was hard on the 80, had a check eng. light and running ruff at the end of the trail.
Code 26 oxygen sensor and possibly a knock sensor.
Should have it patched up for SAS no problem

Success!
OK @Broski it took me awhile to get to your advice. 5 minutes after jacking up 1 rear tire, the rear drive shaft turns & the front drive shaft flange does not turn. So I’m in 2 wheel drive👍🎯👍. Still some more work to accomplish, but SAS 6 is back on the table. What a relief.

Hopefully the guys can pick up this part from Brandon, I will bring the necessary gasket etc & will be forever grateful if we can get this fixed @ camp.

Thank you! From me AND Maureen.

@Manitou Decline

Maiden voyage .. she ran f’ing great on the 5 mile trip home from the shop. There’s more fine tuning to go, but at least I have proof of concept like 12 days before we leave haha!

Status?
  • Finish fan shroud
  • Pull fuel module and braze on push on fittings
  • Finish exhaust
  • Run new fuel line
  • Run heater hoses
  • Run rad hoses
  • Finish intake
  • Reinstall/reassemble front end
  • Wire up batteries/winch
  • Finish trans cover, reinstall carpet
  • Rebuild rear brakes (stuck cylinder on one side)
  • Run new rear brake line (nicked it getting old crossmember mounts out)
  • Plumb PS lines
  • Run AC lines, evacuate and charge system
  • Wiring - presently have an entire GM harness inclusing fuse block just kinda hangin out in there - We might be rolling out with what I'll call "version 1" of the wire harness 😄
  • Build a new 6 lug trailer type axle to replace the leaky 5 lug truck axle under my trailer
  • Wire in a trailer plug
  • Continue fiddling with tune to make it run more better (can do this on the road too)
  • Hope the rednecks that retubed my rear driveshaft actually balanced it (no weights on it..)
  • Remember the 10 things I forgot to do and work on them in camp.
Well...I've been knocking stuff off the list. Fiddling with things today, started it up with all belts and accessories on for the first time. Sounded great, till the PS pump started whining. OK, need to shut it down and add more fluid due to the cooler I installed and filling the system. No problem. Went to start it, starter sounds like crap, barely turns. Then stops turning. I remembered that the starter never sounded great when I drove the donor... ran to town for a other one. Put it in, zizzz--zizzz- turning over great! Then BLAM! dead stop. I don't recall hearing it catch, but who knows... pulled plugs, #8 was full of gas. I have been manually tripping the fuel pump relay to start it, and I did run just fuel for 5 mins or so yesterday double checking my new fuel lines, shouldn't have posed a priblem... but somehow it filled with gas. Compression still 175 just like the others. I checked the FPR diaphragm, good..took the #8 injector out, ohms out right, clicks nice, doesn't seem to leak with 30 psi and carb cleaner in it..spray looks good.. put it back in, start it up... it's got a bent rod. Whack whack whack whack. 🤬.

Damn man, that really blows. If there is any light to this it happened close to home and not at 12,000".

Precisely, sir. You can drive it a very, very long way in 4hi with the hubs unlocked.

Looks like you got the front DS disengaged. Looking fwd to seeing you two!
