I'm about to finalize the paint codes for my 1978 FJ40.

From MUCH searching on this forum I think I found that the PPG code is 14841 and found this website also:

PPG code 14841

Has anybody recently painted their Sky Blue truck this color and where they happy with the match????

Still trying to figure out the bezel and roof color. I've decided that the Cygnus White T-12 is NOT correct for my top and will figure something else out by looking at samples.

But I do have a question on the Bezel - mine has a gray/tan tint which I'm not finding after extensive searching also. This is a very original truck with complete records - 2nd owner from 1983 until I bought it. No idea what happened from 1978-1983 but the PO doesn't think it was re-painted. I could paint it the same color as the roof but the two most definitely aren't the same color currently with what I believe to be original paint.

Looking at the FJ Company's recent Sky Blue truck the bezel looks more tan then mine - but definitely different color from the top:

Any opinions on if my bezel is correct?

Here is paint code 854 on a 1979 (now BJ, but it started off as an FJ40). Not sure if the paint shop used PPG, but we like the match to original. Note that the bezel is much whiter than your 1978......BUT......

the '78 FJ40 in Mustard Yellow I'm currently restoring has a bezel in the same color as yours. I was able to match the original bezel color with Wimbledon White rattle can color from O'Reilly's, as recommended by others here on Mud. The top on the '78 is much whiter than the bezel. Good luck with your decision!!

Here's what I found for the bezel in a PPG book - the bezel is behind the page and there is an oval cutout in the paint sample to aid in the matching.

The C9226 is very close.

And the truck is at the paint shop now. I drove it 5+ miles through Chicago like this.

I'd say it's a lot more peppy with the weight loss and fewer rattles!

That is hilarious! I might even forgive folks for thinking it was a heep!

Would it be possible for your paint guys to paint a match panel for me? I need to match my sky blue (I think) that was painted several years ago on the Aqualu tub, so I am in the dark to the correct color.

I will pay to ship it my way.

THanks,

I doubt they would mind - just make sure it isn't too large and doesn't need much prep. I'll PM my mailing address. We are trying to get a paint chip from PPG before ordering to double check the code.

Sweet! Thanks. They should know what I am talking about. Basically they just shoot some paint on a test card. The paint chip is basically the same thing, just larger.

@x463 any updates? How did paint turn out?

Stripped. Absolutely no rust anywhere. Only surprise was a badly repaired door. Was dented and had 1/4 - 3/8" of filler. They were able to fix it correctly and will may not require any filler.

Haven't shot the paint yet. Hopefully soon.

In my opinion, you get the best colour-match by giving a decent paint supplier a sample (such as the inside non-faded surface of a fuel-door) for them to mix to.

Relying on a paint manufacturer to supply the colour you want simply from a "code number" is crazy when you realise that ingredients for paints are continually being modified (forcing the mixing formulae to likewise be in "a continual state of flux").

Post number one shows "the truest sky blue 854" to my eye.

Here's the best colour-match my paint supplier could do for my 1979 BJ40 using PPG Dulon paint (after being given my fuel door as a sample for their DRIED paint to match):

PS. The cygnus white of my bezel is also Dulon but I wasn't so fussy with that. I never gave them a sample so they worked from their computer data (for Toyota cygnus white in the 1979 era). And although this is what I'm recommending against doing, the colour-match looks pretty good to my eye again. (More luck than anything else in this case though IMO.)

We actually used the inside of the gas tank cover under the passenger seat for the paint match. Didn't end up using the PPG code.

Wow. That says it all.

Thanks!
