One simple project leads to another. I removed my battery in my 1969 FJ40 to make it easier to install a rebuilt fuel pump. The plastic liner under the battery had been hiding rust and corrosion that had built up over the years. The metal tray is in good shape -- only surface rust and corrosion. I have scraped away as much as I can easily clean. I would appreciate the forum experts telling me the best way to clean the tray from here so that I can paint it and re-install. It does not need to be "concours" perfect before I paint it. Thanks! Pictures below. Also, for anyone who might be interested in what a 3/1968 FJ40 battery tray mount looks like, I have attached that photo as well.

Day long soak in Evapo Rust or a similar product.

The absolute easiest way (now that you have gone as far as you have) is to paint it, as is…with POR 15.

It was made to Paint Over Rust.

@mydogpea is selling a new batt tray and hold down in the classified section.

Personally, I’d take to your local powder coater, he’ll blast it to white metal, and the powder coat is basically a plastic, will protect it from the elements and small acid spills.
This is definitely the easy button approach and i have done it for a few parts. Makes sense for the battery tray since it is s harsh environment and powder coat is very durable.

For rust removal I use vinegar. I always have it on hand since I save what I use for my annual hot water heater flush. It’s safe and works, just a takes a little longer than some of the other products.
