I just bought OME 2.5"lift kit for my 97 Fj80 and i would like to know what would be the ideal size tire for on and off road? Im leaning toward purchasing some 35" but am afraid of some rubbing.i am also thinking of getting 33''. What do you guys think is the best option? If you guys could post some pics it would be great.. thanks
Here is my truck with 33's and a 2.5" lift. I loved the look a lot better with the 33's and no lift, but I needed more ground clearance. I plan on going 35's ASAP to get a little more ground clearance and that "look" that I had with 33's and no lift. I think I will ultimately be happy then.
The best tire-lift combo I have ever seen on an 80 is Cristo's truck. It is a 4" Slee lift with 35's I think. I'm going for that look.
The second photo is of my truck with the same 33's and no lift.
Im about a week away from pulling the trigger on some 35's.
If 33's fit with a stock vehicle...why lift?
The higher you lift the more you raise your COG. why not get all the added benifit of that lift that you can. Run the largest tire you can for the amount of lift you have, otherwise why lift?
Not to mention, if you are on this board you are clearly a LC nut. You know the lift and tires are just the begining. How long will you be happy with 33's when you know you can run 35's?
i have 33s with no lift... 2.5 inch lift should have a minimum of 35s if you are replacing the tires. Anything over 2.5inch lift should go to 37s. Remember you should regear when you get that much larger than the stock 31s.
I bought my cruiser with 35s already mounted (lift, stock gears). They look properly sized. That said, it makes the cruiser BIG. Like forget about parking in most parking garages, low hanging trees will worry you, your passengers will think it's cool to climb in and then you'll feel bad when they fall getting out, that sort of thing. It drove nicely around town, but had trouble carrying overdrive on the highway.
Because my 35s were hardcore mud tires and I drive street / dry gravel and dirt, I bought new duratracs and went 33s mostly because I run a 15" wheel and 35x15 are extremely hard to find and expensive. Looks-wise, I do notice that the wheel wells look a bit emptier but I tend more towards the expedition side of things so it looks a bit more natural to me and less monster truckish. Driving, it's much quicker off the line and easily carries highway speeds in overdrive with much less hunting gears. It definitely makes the engine seem a bit OVER revvy, as it seems to rev noticeably higher before shifting. It also handles much better with the 33s but I admit I don't feel as though I could drive over anything that gets in my way the way I did with the 35s.
As I've read on her previously, my take is if you're primarily off road or just into big tire looks then 35s. Otherwise 33s. That said, if I can find skinny 35s when I'm next looking for tires...
I'm on 35s with a J lift (3.5") and stock gears. The rig drives and handles nicely. The high point on my rig is about 6'6". Most parking garages are over 7' so not much of an issue. If they're under 7', I usually look for a surface lot. Long springs and shocks allow for a lot of bounce, I've nipped the roof rack in a 6'10" garage.
