New factory leather front seat covers and head rests will set you back just shy of 2,500 bucks, in the boxes.
A top quality re-finish of the exterior will be between 6 and 8 thousand bucks.
I got a high quality paint job, new exterior door handles, new rain gutters, new rubber (antenna, windshield, rear window), new plastic under the windows, new windshield wiper arms, and all dings repaired, along with a few other odds and ends, for about $8K.
I would find somebody who would be going to Mexico,Argentina or another country where they do great leather work. Send them the leather seat covers and replacement panels and hope for the best. It should be a pretty straight forward replacement.
My friend had his 73 VW bus re-upholstered in Tiajuana Mexico and they did an amazing job for about $700. They did everything including a custom head liner, huge rear fold down seat and door liners. He got it done about 5 years ago and it has held up great. He got his done in tweed but they had all kinds of high quality leather available. Not sure of the shop but he said there were a lot of them to choose from....pretty good option for all of us that live down this way.
