anyone got any camping mods that doesn't involve buying expensive custom parts or building a full width platform (i mean i could see doing a mini platform on one side that is like 4" high but that's max)?

anyone made any kind of modular stacking system?

i carry way too much gear - tools, spare parts, camping, fishing (wish list), clothes, CPAP, camping fuel, beach gear, work papers and laptop, and all sorts of gear and it is off the chain inside when i camped last weekend.

01. I've got a used 1 UP swing out i bought that i am attaching a bike rack to.
02. i think i am putting in some kind of interior roof rack for the interior and i guess i am fabricating something that will go in place of or around the rear handles.
03. i think i am putting in a second battery.

1. suggestions on making or hanging curtains?
2. suggestions on hanging a rear upper hatch window screen or block out? last weekend i stretched towel across the top lip of the upper hatch before closing it but this is too much work.
3. anyone got any write ups or photos of wiring an "always on" USB or other outlets to the front or rear of the cabin? its a pain to hump it up to the front to turn the car in to get power?
4. anyone got portable power and if so what unit and where do you put it and how do you use it? last weekend my phone ran out of juice and i couldn't find an AC outlet and my portable charging pack was out too so i realized i need a kind of power bank to power up the portable charger and the phone.
5. anyone got any links on budget solar power (and how it works or what it does)?
6. any links to good documentation on the above?

DIY drawer system v2. Huge slideout drawer on driver's side, fridge and slideout on passenger side. When the 2nd row seats are laid down, the drawer platform becomes a sleeping area.

100A Anderson to run the compressor (top)

Ports Left to right driven off 2nd battery:
  • 45A Anderson connector with dedicated circuit for fridge with on/off switch on the dash.
  • Dual 45A Anderson connectors
  • Cig lighter.
  • Dual USB with voltage monitor

I'm cheap and this combination does everything I want (for now). Behind the interior panel is a remote controlled 4 channel relay built on a DIY mini version of the QMP that DeltaVS carries. I plan on adding a Victron MPPT on the QMP with an XT60 port for charging the 2nd battery with a solar blanket.

did you figure out anything for your curtains? that is my next goal... I did just score short curtains and now to figure out how to hang them. I do have paracord running from front sun visor to the back third row seat belt bolt towards the back door. I was going to use magnets for the rear hatch curtain or another paracord going across the back.
Curious...

I have a sleep system in mine with a fulltime bed and cubbies underneath but no drawers yet.

Also, additional power ports are necessary just have not done that yet. Currently we are using a Jackery with solar panels.

Power is as easy as running a fused wire from the battery along the frame and up and into the quarter panel.

You could look into tinting the windows instead of curtains as well

Darker window tint… yeah, no, here’s why:

1-Would make it harder to see out for the driver in an already tall and large vehicle

2-when you are inside at night with the lights on… everybody can see you!! Curtains are a must!

Also, I’m on a homemade sleep platform so we lay at window level.

Here's a link to what I ended up doing:

I found screen socks for the doors, rear sliding windows and moonroof have screens with magnets. They are great!!

I think this is the size I got. Four of them and some plywood on top to create a cheap and easily removable sleeping platform. I got a youtube video on them somewhere here I posted many years ago.

The second seat row when raised on a 2"x4" is flat and provides enough of a surface together with the plywood to have a twin size air mattress on.

Following because I am interested in this topic. I’d like to add a flat surface in the back to store stuff underneath and sleep atop of—I just dont want to spend a fortune.
Regarding the Jackery system mentioned above, Costco (now and then) has them on a very steep discount. I’ve found that if you view the item within the app, add it to your cart, but never pull the trigger, their algorithm eventually capitulates so you’ll “pull the trigger” per se.

I had a sleep platform built and it was pretty cheap.
I posted about it under the ‘what did you do with your 80 this weekend’ and there’s a spec sheet link somewhere on here that was a perfect guide.
I would have gone a little lower so right above the wheel wells is where you wanna be.

Thank you! I’ll search for it. A buddy and I are going to try and build the platform/storage this spring. He’s handy and it’s my subversive way of convincing him he needs an old Toyota.

Cheap and I just mount it in when I'm going camping. I can move it in and install and then move it back into a garden shed on my own - so light enough.

Bolts down using rear passenger seat bolts. One sheet 8x4 of 1/2 plywood. Cheap :) Legs are just glued up 1/2" ply to get thickness/strength for my fat a$$.

I can slid a bunch of plastic totes underneath with cooking gear, food, other gear etc.

Slide in and rotate into place.

Ready for a good night's sleep.

I don't camp near others, so curtains are not required. Besides, if they want to look at my fat a$$, more power to them :)

I have permanent 12V power at the rear (similar to an above post), I have both standard cig lighter and the smaller 45A powerpole outlets. Also a bunch of outlets behind the 80's center console, powerpole, USB, USB-C (power-delivery for laptop etc). All the aux power is from a 100AH LiFePO4 battery in the engine bay that is charged from the main/alternator via a 25A DC DC charger that can also take input (built in MPPT) from a cheap solar panel. Powerpoles everywhere and a few SB50 as well.

cheers,
george.

This style of solar screen window covers are popular in Australia. You see them permanently in the rear windows of loads of 4x4s

there's lots of different brands

for general info . . .

Adjust your side mirrors correctly, you don't need to see out the back.

If I'm camping for more than a day or two, it's not uncommon to have stuff stacked to the ceiling. Rear side windows aren't available to see through anyway.

I wished I bought a set from a MUD member that was selling a year ago!
Bought the Sunshield US version because it was difficult dealing with Solar Screen at that time.

Sounds like you have a yard sale each time you setup camp!

An attic rack is a nice way to store light stuff out of the way. Delta VS makes the brackets for the 3rd row grab handles, or you can make your own. METRA rack shelving is the shiznit for this application

pls do some searching in the appropriate forum for power stuff as there are plenty of threads on this!

I have a second battery under the hood and it powers up all accessory+winch. All cig lighters are always hot in my 80.
5. anyone got any links on budget solar power (and how it works or what it does)?
I use a simple 100w renogy folding lightweight suitcase solar panel to charge the second battery if I'm not moving every day. I move it to aim at the sun. Easy peasy. However, if I'm moving every day or every other day, I don't need to recharge the second battery. It's a lead acid group 27F.
6. any links to good documentation on the above?
