Each year at their Christmas sale I buy on sale seat foam from SOR. I have to have a few 🍺🍺 before opening the invoice. Granted, I know the price up front but still hard to stomach. 2 pieces of bottom seat foam $380.00 and...…. $85 to ship a 10 pound box..... Really??

However, like I said I knew the price up front and had to have it.

With so many products being reproduced hasn't someone thought about making foam? I have tried adding my own foam to beef up the existing warn out foam nothing beats new.

I'm in the same boat.......need to redo the drivers seat and I'm procrastinating, can't believe/stomach that price point.

Check local upholstery shops. I had mine redone to stock pattern with new foam and even painted rails and sides for 450.00 for both seats. Very happy with results. That is less than what you paid for the foam shipped to you and they are done by pro.

Was that local to you in Bakersfield? I might just make the drive north to save that $$.

I'm currently looking at the SOR high density foam (@ $399 + Tax) and Cruisercorps front seat covers (@ $330)- that way both front seats match, even though my passenger seat is in really great condition.

Yes that is local to me--Tax included!! I told her they were going in an off road vehicle that is extra bouncy so she made the bolsters higher than stock--- So seats look stock but they hold you in better. Could not be happier with results. See my pics on 9/09/2019 page 1089; post 21,770 in the "What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week" thread.

THANKS for the heads up -
I've checked with a "soon to be retired" guy near me, VERY good upholstery guy, but more expensive than $450 and I wasn't totally convinced he could redo the stock seats to as close to what buying the foam and covers would be. He seemed more than happy to install what I would purchase from SOR and Cruisercorps. (I got the impression he more wanted me to be happy with the results than charge me)

I come across your dilemma on a regular basis. Unfortunately there are only a few suppliers for LC seat foam pads. Some of our customers get lucky and find one on EBay, OfferUp or Craigslist for a discounted price. If not we simply repair the existing seat foam pad which does take a bit of time since it requires hand shaping to match the opposite side. See RP1 photo.

What causes the seat foam pad to break down is once the foam backing wears out on the fabric, vinyl or leather. Every time you side off your seat to exit, it acts like sand paper and over time breaks down the seat foam. See RP2 photo.

We add lining to all new or repaired seat foam pads so when you exit it glides off the foam pad instead. Basically doubling the life span of the foam pad. See RP3 and 4 photo.

Just one last thing to remember is sometimes the price of upholstery work will very on the quality of supplies (foam, fabric, leather, vinyl and foam backing) that will be used. Always ask your local upholstery shop to show you the difference between their inexpensive fabrics vs high end. If they are honest they will show you the difference.

I bit the bullet on the expensive seat foam... buy once, cry once. And since, I’ve spent hundreds of hours piloting my 40 all over the US... and I’m in complete comfort 😉

My upolstery fellow was impressed with the quality of the foam... I have no idea what he was talking about but it made me feel better about investing the money in them!

I was lucky enough to be able to save most of my seat foam. I was dreading the money drop to get new foam. I did have some foam from a pelican case that was pretty close in density. That saved me from my driver hole in the seat. Then I enameled the seat brackets and replaced the hog nail wires with plastic coated wire clothes hangers. Turned out superb. The covers where from Cruiser Corp!

I ended up buying a can of spray adhesive and $20 dollars of foam and rebuilt mine.

Hi Guys
Sorry about chiming in so late on this thread.
We are in the middle of rolling out new foam. We have started with the 40s and then on to the 60s. Our 40 foam will be available in about 4 months and the 60s hopefully a couple months after.

We will be offering both tops and bottoms and our price point will be much more affordable.
The issues we have had is finding anything cost effective within the states is next to impossible and quality control on foam can be tough when outsourcing to another country.

With all that being said we have built a relationship with a company whom is manufacturing company for a multitude of newer Toyota products including foam and our working on pro types with quality and fit our number one goal.

Thank you guys for our support and positive feedback on our covers. We hope to get that same feedback when our foam rolls out!

thanks Mike

Matt,
I live 25 min from SOR so I can avoid the excessive shipping cost, but as a resident of CA must pay sales tax.
They are last on my search list for parts to purchase. I'd rather support any of our Mud supporting vendors for exactly your reasons above.

Once again I want to say thank you for the support throughout this community.

I do however want to be clear that in NO WAY am I questioning SOR as a company. I think they have been a pioneer in this industry and have paved the way for many of us in this community.

I have through the years heard complaints about their high prices and high shipping rates. With that being said, I have a great respect for them as a company and the products they carry.

As Amazon and many other large companies have started free shipping, easier return policies and 24 hour shipping times it has in fact changed the way consumers look at things. Who would have ever thought we would some day be impatient waiting in the drive thru for our food for 3 minutes because Chick- Fil -A can do it in 30 seconds????

Though as a company we have tried to adopt a lot of these new ideas, it hasn’t come without a cost. Our profit margins can be tough and FREE SHIPPING comes as a big price for our company as well as others.

We have been beyond blessed as a company with great customers and employeesWe hope we can continue to keep prices low and shipping cost to a bare minimum but I would be lying if I didn’t tell you it’s a daily struggle at times!

I will sign out at this point.

I just bought (from SOR) a $33 Speedi Sleeve and paid $17 for shipping.

Amazon has free shipping but the part was $64 🙄

I agree wholeheartedly Mike, all good with SOR. Nothing in your post was taken wrong from me for sure. Just sharing my personal experience, and when they have something nobody else does, I drive over and get it.

Also agree about prices continuing to rise for everyone including the shipping companies.

HOWEVER, great customer service doesn't cost a dime, and it goes a lot further than free shipping in my opinion.

FYI, your last post proves my point!

Always a customer

Please consider us poor 55 guys. SOR sells replacement foam which I would gladly pay for but they will only sell it with their vinyl covers. My ‘77 pig has factory cloth/vinyl and I want to recover as close to OEM as possible.

Hey Mike,

Any updates on the seat foam? I'm sure Covid hasn't helped any, but I'm pretty sure Santa is bringing me your seat covers for my '77 FJ40 for Christmas even though I've not been a good boy...
