I've searched but can't find a detailed thread on removing the dash from a 97. Anybody know of one?

Instrument cluster, or the middle where the stereo goes? If the middle, try YouTube for stereo installs. I found several good videos. I didn't see much for removing the instrument side. I used

Are you talking about just removing the speedo cluster, or the "whole" dash? If your talking about the whole dash, these photos give you an idea what your in for. These are photos of Mud member Koifish's dash, that he had to take apart to replace his heater core. So, since he just did this job, I'm sure he can answer your questions on how it's done.

Yes, removing the entire dash. I am trying to replace the air vent on the left side of the clock. It requires dash removal.

Yellow & Black Box next to High Low Shifter?

Are you removing the air duct or the air vent (air flow directional control). If you're removing the air vent you don't have to remove the dash. The vent and the clock come out in one piece (just carefully pry it out of the dash pad). If you're talking about the air duct that's a different story and the dash would have to be removed.

Dash is not difficult. I removed my dash to replace the front heater core in about 45 minutes. The LC actually has a really simple dash setup. Granted I have done many evaporator jobs and dash removals on BMW and Mercedes etc. But honestly it is not difficult. Are you sure you cannot remove the center section around the radio/instrument cluster to get to the piece you need ?

It is the whole duct and vent piece, I think it requires das full removal. Hmmm.

There's a sneaky screw in the defrost vent(s?) on each top corner...You know, the little ones that point at the side windows. The rest of the screws are pretty easy to find.

I knew there was another trick to this. Those vents are tricky to remove without breaking them. I used a hotel key card to slide in and release the clips. See this thread for a pic.

You can do the 95+ in an hour or less. Now if someone tells me they took one out of a 94 and older they are full of it.

Dang...was so hoping...

i mean its not that much harder, just that much slower. the way the pieces wrap around the steering wheel makes it a real pain. the 95+ is just more modular. the radio trim is a different piece from the cluster. things like that make it easier.

Agreed. Thought many times of adding a well-placed 'seam' to separate the cluster and radio portions of the dash panel.

I’m assuming you’re talking about removing the dash and not the entire heater box/heater core. I can see how someone could shave some serious time off of removal after they’ve done it a time or two, but there’s no way people are getting the heater core out in less than an hour. If so I’d happily pay someone to come help myself and @ScubaSteve205 get this heater core out. Of course if he keeps leaving screws in pieces he thinks is ready to remove we might be done by now :flipoff2:

Reviving this thread for RTH from people who have done this before:

I'm having a helluva time getting the cluster finish panel (black piece that goes around the gauge pod) out. Feels like I'm going to break the vent aiming thingy on the right hand side. Any tips? Do I need to remove the vent first? If so how? Read a thread that say it should just "pop out" but it really feels like I'm going to break it if I apply any more pressure.
