hey guys got a rather sizeable rust issue on the rear and the sides of my roof, as most of us. i thought it would be a simple cut the rust out put a bit of metal back in...... but upon removing the rust i saw that inside the roof it was all rusted out also, like this:

so what i was thinking was either to cut and lift the roof at the back somewhere like here:

or possibly drill out all the spot welds along the rain gutters and remove the roof skin?? what problems would i run into here?? i notice the windscreen rubber is more than likely going to be compromised if i remove it fully? maybe i could leave it connected at the front and just lift it so i can access the under roof area to either replace the rusted bits or atleast pain it with rust converter then paint it.....

now tell me how stupid my idea is or give me pointers as to why/not it would work, thanks guys

i have seen your thread, but in auss most of the roofs are the same, rusted!! the skin itself is a relatively easy repair, its the inner supports of the roof that seem rusted.....

In North America that's the way most are as well but it seems those from the northern areas rust from the bottom up and those in the south rust from the top down. I got one of each!

It appears your going to cut somthing, you may want to drill out the welds, cut the roof just above the front windshield and repair the upper support rails. Check out Buckroseau 45LV thread starting on page 19, now Matt's got skills that many don't . If you haven't seen the build , check it out. Here's a few pic's

that is an AWESOME thread explains just what i was thiniking of doing...... but yeah i think i may have to cut along the roof at the front before the top of the windshield.... which shouldnt be too much of an issue, if i manage to cut in a straight line :P

hey thanks Lou, i need top work out how to search....... i have filtered thru a few of the thread pages but have not yet fully harnessed the power of search :P

yeah i have done that, im just not that efficient at actually finding what im actually looking for :P but i did find both those threads thanks.

it got me thinkin... maybe i should brace it more and integrate some kind of roof rack mount into the fram under the skin?? as i think i may end up loading up the roof racks with stuff when i go 'traveling' and by the looks of the rain gutters, it would prolly be best not to put too much weight on them. Even if theyre in good nick, let-a-lone in my "used" condition...? not real sure just yet, will keep you posted with my musings and their outcomes :P thanks for the intrest
