Refresh Steering Wheel Clamshell (1 Viewer)

I have used the search function. Can someone link me or give me some dos and do nots on refreshing the clamshell on the steering column. Can it be sanded LIGHTLY? using what grit SP? What color gray did you paint yours/

I show the calm shell cover still available. 45286-60907 was superceded to 45286-60909. That one may have the hole for the steering column lock with the button to allow the ignition key to be removed. It may have plug covering the hole. Depending how bad your is may make sense to replace it. Here in rhe AZ desert plastic gets brittle. This one of those parts if it not in good shape I would replace it with good used or new. Show can get the part for around $30 online. Not how much effort would put into a part could replace new for pretty cheap. Haven't checked it really available just show it good in a few places.

I sanded with 400 wet/ dry paper and painted it with black satin finish

TOOTHPASTE! Its not showroom but it made a noticeable difference.

Yes, it absolutely can be wetsanded. Dip wet/dry paper in water to remove plastic dust or use a squirt bottle. Started with P500 on my clamshell to quickly remove deep gouges. Just work your way up. P1000 to remove the P500 sanding marks, P1500 to remove P1000 marks, ect. I like to go up to P5000. 3M makes a fine grit paper called Trizact. Meguires sells great paper made by Nikken in Japan.

I would recommend Novus plastic polish. I have used it on old pinball machine plastic parts and it works great.

Yeah, I use a hook & loop pad to hold the 3M. Purchased from a online store Autogeek. They often run sitewide sales.

Not sure what fasteners your referring too? These are like 60/62 calmshell that uses screws to hold two pieces together and to the column. Looking it appears to have four different screws. Have a few of these somewhere stored away. Didn't remember the screws being different from each other.

I show four different part numbers. Do not say how many of each or a year range. The calmshell itself shows different parts numbers for different year ranges. Also confusing the only version available is both pieces or just the top. Versions up to 1/79 show upper and lower. 1/79+ only has different number for locking and non locking column and non locking is superceded to locking column. If that also includes screws is also unclear.

All my spares calmshells and steering columns are at another location. Do have a 9/72-5/76 and the 1/79+ cruisers to check.

Interesting would need to get from the UK or Japan. What part number are you using? Would think that would be a non Land Cruiser specific screw. Amayama shows all four part numbers available $1.00 to $1.30. need to take the one on my 79 apart to.check the screws.

Not near my 40 to check but, aren't they just 4mm x .7. Bolt Depot has all sorts of random metric screws. They'll sell small quantity's.

To answer folks on this one here is what I've concluded.

Originally the clamshell had 6 machine thread screws, the clamshells had steel threaded inserts (nice feature). The later version, '80+ removed the threaded inserts and went to self-tapping screws. Therefore if you buy a NEW clamshell from Toyota you get a clamshell that:
1. Has the hole for the steering lock
2. Requires 4 self tapping screws and two machine screws (these two thread into the ignition housing).

Part numbers would then be:

45286-60909 - upper and Lower with hole for steering lock (-60909 w/o hole is NLA)
90164-50048 - self tapping screws, qty 4
93319-15012 - machine screws, qty 2
