Now that I am at a usable state in the red 40 project build, I wanted to add some recovery gear and emergency gear.
This group of 40 owners is always so creative and clever. I thought it would be nice to see what kind of gear you carry.
I did some searching and found a neat Jerry Can Tool storage container.
Some things on my "To Do" list:
Add an air compressor- do you use a tank?
get a first aid kit
recovery strap
snatch block
tree strap

So show some pics of recovery or emergency stuff you have added to your 40!

I use a tank. I made a wooden mount (small cutout for the bar, large cutout for the tank) and strap it to the rear roll bar leg with a ratchet strap.

Check out a bubba rope instead of a strap (or in addition). They're much easier on the recovery points. They're stretchy. Not cheap though.

I have one of these rampage jerry can tool boxes. Its a great idea and I like the design save two things the stupid screwdriver holder and much more worse is the lock/opening mechanism. Very china cheap and poorly designed. It gets stuck closed a lot and then you can't get to your things when you need them. I was on the side of the road in freezing temps and my hands were numb and I couldn't open the thing. Very frustrating. I plan to rip out the lock and spring and fab something up because its ridiculous. Oh I have a tow strap in it. :hmm:

carpet remnants?

fire extinguisher, hi-lift, big wood blocks, shovel, carpet remnants

I have to ask, how do you use the carpet remnants?
Gary

Hi lift, ARB recovery kit (strap, tree saver, clevis shackles, snatch block) , spare tire, tools and parts necessary to change a birfield or rear axle, 15# CO2 tank (much better than a compressor or air tank, IMHO). 12 ga Wire, wire connections and splices, and wiring tools, spare points, cap and rotor.

Spare jacket and rain gear. Fire making materieals. 2M radio with AA adapter battery unit, Wasatch Cruisers members phone numbers in my cell phone. Small solar Panel to charge cell phone. 5 gallons of magic fire juic (gasoline) 5 gallons of water. And a camp chair.

50 year old JackAll jack (rebuilt), 25' heavy tow rope (stored behind spare tire), 5 lb fire extinguisher (under drivers seat), tools (Tuffy 8" console), AC compressor converted for onboard air (tank to be remounted), 22 gal aux fuel, jumper cables (under rear bench seat), flashlights & gorilla lights, empty 5 gal tank on rear swing out in case I need water (water tends to be plentiful)...

Winch... Taken off for repair in 1996... Melted wires while pulling out some fool.

Depends on what I'm doing. But the things that never leave it are, strap/recover kit, jumper cables, fire extinguisher, and hi-lift.

Carpet remnants are for when you have to do repair work. Gives you something to lay/kneel on.

Good idea on the carpet remnants, I have the storage box in the rear floor, I think I will put some in their to keep the tools from scaring the Raptor liner and have them to put down on the ground. Thanks for that!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi all,

It really depends upon what you use your Land Cruiser for. At a minimum for a 40/45/55 Series one should have a basic tool set for minor repairs. If the rig has a winch that is actually used it is probably a good idea to always have at least a "D" ring shackle or two and a tree saver strap in the vehicle.

I use my FJ40 as a 'wheeling rig, which gets abused on a regular basis. I carry lots of tools, parts, and recovery gear on off-road trips. But there is the point of taking too much stuff (too much weight = reduced vehicle performance.)

Regards,

Alan

Just to add a couple of my essentials...

1'x1' or so high density foam for kneeling on.
Small tarp tp lay down on if needed.
And one of my favs- large zip ties.

On top of that it's the usual stock tools, hardwood boards, 2x shackles, 2x tree straps, pulley, stock jack, small folding shovel, trenching shovel, flashlights.

How about come-a-long cable winches. Times I've been stuck I've only needed pulled out maybe 4-5 feet max. Plus it can pull any direction. Any comments? Yes, I have a hi lift. Just a real hastle to use as a winch.

Fire extinguisher!!!!! Big enough to actually do the job. Tow strap. Small length of chain. D shackles. Army shovel (or larger shovel for snow), tools, jumper cables, hi lift and sometimes a come a long.

I also bring a ton of small stuff like bailing wire, electrical connecters, ect that I've found useful over the years. I have a box of junk that always goes on longer trips.

^This, except I have OBA (and love it, so to each there own here). In addition to my winch, of course. Comprehensive 1st aid kit that includes a trauma pac, since there is a hi possibility that a injury involving a heavy truck could cause a catastrophic injury.

Now that I am on the east coast, most of the wheeling allows for a base camp to carry extra tools and spares. Also I make sure others I am wheeling with have at least the contents of the above mentioned recovery kit.

You asked about recovery, but Specific spares are important to. spare soft brake line, ARB air line repair kit, Drive shaft and/or u joint, hub, bailing (hi tensile) wire, nuts and bolts, tire repair kit, 19v 1/2" impact gun, foam mat, oil recovery mats, 550 cord, duct tape and zip ties to name a few.
