You nailed it there - if i had the tooling I'd mess with regearing. I don't have a press or the other required goodies any more and the ability to send a 3rd out is just too compelling. Torfab did my last front and rear. Getting ready to order a new 3rd from Currie for the rear on the new truck.
Sweet Brown still has Toyota axles????

No other human quality will ever top that of persistence. This is not rocket science but does require care and patience of the inexperienced hence my excruciatingly slow pace.
I thought you were having fun. Now it's persistence? @Feldrian appropriately mentioned tooling and other required goodies. Those really help! Most folks that have the right tools use them more than once or twice a year. Come to think of it they have the experience, too. And they enjoy an income from plying their skills. Maybe that persistence can pay off since you have many of the tools you need plus you can fab up some of the tools you don't have, not to mention the patience to learn and the time to do all this. All in all, it would be a nice skill to have.

Toyota 9.5 3rd member in a Diamond housing up front with Toyota outers. Ford 9" 3rd member in a Diamond housing in the rear with Dana 60 outers.

Planning to replace the rear spool with an ARB Competition locker. I end up reversing a lot on off camber snowy trails in the winter and the ability to unlock the rear realty helps steering. I'd also like to park my trailer a little further from the trailhead and drive in a few miles to reduce theft problems.

I agree.

Diff assembly taught me that the carrier bearing nuts are not identical when running an ARB air locker. I bought a spanner socket tool to fit the Toyota side bearing nuts

but the ARB “axle” protrudes farther outboard so as to facilitate the air seal housing. because of this the tool I bought won’t work. Won’t reach. So I built another tool.

I’m done for today but the backlash is very close. The kids from next door came over and set me strait. Persistence.

Pinion too shallow? Backlash sits at about 8-9 thousands.

It’s amazing the diffenece some torque here or there will make. I applied additional torque to the nut you see with the tool on it that’s all and the pattern changed. I’m inclined toward leaving it there. Opinions?

Dude, are you sure you're still having fun? You're making me more and more happy that i outsource gear work.
Today has induced a headache but I’m still having fun. If this is not done by tomorrow morning I’ll take it to Woody’s 4x4 in Vancouver. It’s not too bad looking right now. I’m part time so it’s engaged off-road only.

From what I see it's still to shallow and not centered 🤷‍♂️
And why I send mine out.
Even for the pros it takes multiple attempts to get it right ;)

For what it's worth I have two other friends do this job and both of them where back in there in short order so take the time to get it right !

I pulled the pinion to put a shim beneath the forward race to bring the pinion deeper. Now I can’t get the damn race to go back in. Was easy the first time. I’m taking it to Woody’s 4x4 tomorrow.

Got to give you credit for trying. I'm with @Broski , "good call". Too much at stake to not get this right.

I can do it right but my patience has run out. Want my junk back on the road. I like driving it.
