A nasty dent next to the front window hinge.
Used a hydraulic spreader to push it out. The first picture was after my first two pressings.

This is how the patch is made.
Two pieces of sheet metal 1,5 mm

Bends are made with a vice bender.

Leaving it in was not an option.

Got rid of some dents using hammer and dolly and the English wheel.

Michael, are you using a bench vise for a sheet metal brake for your bends? If so, I'm even MORE impressed with your incredible replication work.
I have a larger brake but these smaller patches work better with the vice brake.
 
Straitened out the dents a bit and gave it a quick blast to see whats left.

Still lots of steel to replace.
 
Slow and steady, but worth it in the end.

The panels are quite flat in a 40... but my past experience has been that a ball peen hammer can be your best friend. My rockers are quite bad... but I do have some donor sheet metal. Let me know if you ever need pics of what has rusted away... I'm sure someone else can help it I'm not able.

Most of the shape is still there, just thin and with holes in it.

Some parts of mine were gone or fell off when I first got it in 1991. I had to guesstimate the height of the tub in the back because it was gone in a that area. I see photos of what others consider rusty or even too rusty, and wish I had that much to start with.

My '78 didn't have a back end when I got it. This one just had some serious rust when it came rolling down a hill. It was stored since.
 
Cut a piece of steel to replace the thin material on the kick panel.
Set the rear flange.

Cut some parts that are not going to be replaced and clamped it in position.

Because the cowl is bend back on the ds side from the crash I have to press it back in the right position.
I need the correct angle to continue with the patch.

Seats needed a little persuasion but eventually came out.
Corrected the opening and welded in a brace.

Spent half an hour in the shop this evening.
Started on the remaining part of the bottom reinforcement of the bib.

You probably could have just tacked in a few patches instead of making an entire new southern bib support. . . :)

Seriously, It is a good thing you made time to make a new one this evening as the original looks like it will turn to dust any moment.
Yes I was afraid of that so I pushed it ahead in the (non existing) schedule.
That and the fact I didn't want to change clothes so did a job I could do without risking my mariage.:grinpimp:
