Its no going to be cheap but it my baby

Been discussed several times before but will vary greatly by your input provided in the project, what else you do “while in there”, and your location and mechanic chosen.

~4500-7500 for an RnR with rebuild between if you dont do any work and replace some olastic and rubber bits along the way

I second what YMT said most of the time these just need Valve guides with the head gasket. Did mine 94 at 270k lower end was fine she purrs like a kitten.

As stated in the other tread, do a leakdown test and see what's wrong before you commit to a full rebuild. These engines can have specific things go wrong (valve seals, head gasket, oil leaks out the wazoo), all of which are fixable without a complete rebuild. Most everybody who tears down their engine finds the cylinders, rings, lower end bearings perfectly serviceable at way over 200k miles. A complete rebuild is not necessary for most usage until 400k+ miles.

Unless you've just got a lot of money sitting around and can't think of anything to spend it on.

Since you are in WA, you might consider giving TorFab a call. They have been really helpful answering my questions in the past. And, if you need work done, they are a reputable Land Cruiser specific shop. The are up in Everett, it looks like:

$5000 to $7500 if you do most work yourself and do a decent job of replacing/repairing a lot of PM type items.

Really depends "how far down the rabbit hole you wanna dive".

cost me about 4500 bucks for all new gaskets, arp head studs and a shop doing the engine work. that was a bore job and turning the crank thanks to a low oil issue from the PO. i did the RnR of the engine myself and replaced some hoses and other things while i was in there.

That seems high to me. Can you explain that pricing a little bit?

Edit: Read through a build thread where a guy spent 4100 for a full rebuild

Everything cost more on the west Coast!!!!!

$5000 for top end rebuild here in SoCal. New head, head bolts, gasket set, machine work, bunch of other misc thing like hoses, plugs, etc. But I didn’t do any of the work, just cut a check.

I was recently quoted 13k for a complete overhaul of my 1FZ. That's with me doing nothing but dropping the truck off at a REPUTABLE Toyota shop known for their high quality work.

I've been quoted 5k by engine builders in town for a rebuild.

I was at $2K here in TX for same above. @beno sent me the gasket kit. Minus top end machine work, I did all my self. Block, pistons, bottom end, and bores were good.

Not the same if you did the work your self, The only work Koifish did is cut a Check

I'm in Palm Springs and possibly looking at a rebuild. Can you message me (or post here) with where you went (and how it worked out)? Thanks!

sorry for the necro, btw

Hi, Costs vary wildly. The problem is good work. You need to find someone who has pride in their work and will warranty their work. Very few shops around here that are like that. Very few shops around Dallas that people will recommend. Surprisingly few. Also some shops will hold on to your cruiser far to long before you get it back. Months and even years go by. Easy to run a business when you don’t tell the customer when they will get their truck back.

Well here is what bad rings burning a lot of oil looks like.

And this is what you will find in your pan when your BEB are about to let go.

Hi, did you get it done yet?
I just got a new short block for under 4k and have a guy who did everything including the head and new gaskets for around 3k. I can ask him or you can if you are interested in the same route

Took my 1994 to Tony @ JPR in Vegas He quoted me $7500 to remove, rebuild and replace. He does good work. Rig had 240K miles and bad head gasket and a valve issue. Figured I would start fresh on a rust free nice rig.
