I thought I would share some pics of the installation I did on my FJ40 rear speakers. After looking on this sight and many others I decided to design my own and build up a box for each rear corner. The idea was to angle the speaker towards the center and up at the back of the driver and passengers head. They turned out pretty good after some tweaking on the original cardboard templates to get the angles right. Here are the pics of what I came up with.

Hope you like em and they sound great too!!

Looks great! I have been considering some different ways to install some rear speakers and your idea looks to be one I will be using.

Thanks for sharing!

fully enclosed

looks like just the 4 pieces --I suppose some fiber board or mdf with relief cuts would bend around there if you wanted that---or you could put some foam in there maybe

is there an advantage to fully enclosed as far as sound?

If there was a cutout template in pdf you'd start seeing a lot of those! You'd be famous:idea::clap:

This is a great idea. How are they secured to the tub?

add a power outlet too from a marine vendor.

How about build in a inverter for power too?

Great ideas there

Yes, I also thought about the cup holder idea but didn't know where to look, so thanks for that one!

I made an extra set just in case there were others out there that liked the idea so I could measure them up. I'll go ahead and put together a PDF of the template and post it.

I attached them to the tub by attaching a strip of wood with screws (could use silicone) and then screwed the box to that. They were surprisingly very secure without but didn't want them too easy to remove by some yahoo passing by.

They are not fully enclosed by wood but uses the tub corner as the bottom and rear of the box. Still sounds good but I am sure the sound could be improved with slight modifications, foam etc..

I did not seal the wood as I don't plan on running them in the rain. I'd need boat speakers for that also. I did think about painting the wood prior to the covering but went without.

Cheers!

Thanks again for the feedback!

I guess you got a point there!

Shows what I know:doh:
Don't be so hard on yourself bsmith. Technically the tub acts as the back and the bottom.

Does a door speaker have back?? Does a dash speaker have a back?? Most anything build in a car uses the car as part of the speaker except for sub woofers and even then some use your whole trunk!

Lets just call these tub speaks and yes the last time I checked they were fully enclosed, including the back and sound great even with the top off my cruiser. Can't wait to hear them with the top on!! I guess when I put the top back on they will really be fully enclosed. :)

Nice design and install pwelco, reminds me of the rear speakers in a TLC Icon.

PDF? I don't need no steenkin' PDF. Guys, the OP has shown you how to do it - just grab some cardboard and a sharpie and go make yourselves a template.
