I think I have a rear main seal that is leaking pretty good any one had this issue before? I looks to be leaking there the block meets the transmission. Just looking for what i can expect from anyone who has messed with this before.

my valve cover gasket was the culprit in what i thought was a rear main seal leak, the front didn't leak but on a back corner it did.ran down the block to the trans tunnel.

Rear main seal is comparatively rare compared to the upper oil pan arch seal, and some other oil leaks that will trickle down and make an oily mess in the same area. Clean up the whole area and take a closer look to determine exactly where the leak is coming from. If you're lucky, it might be coming from the valve cover, oil pump or some other easier-to access seal.

In the case of the upper oil pan arch or a rear main, many conclude it is easier to just top off the oil occasionally than to repair.

oil pan arch seal: Oil pan arch seal

You can pull the inspection plate and look up into the hole (with a mirror) to determine if it is actually your rear main. If its relatively dry in that cavity, the culprit is your likely your oil pan arch seal and not the rear main.

First of all: What year? It makes a difference.

Typical oil leaks on the 93-97 are:
Valve Cover Gasket
Spark Plug Tube Seals
Front Main Seal
Oil Pump Seal
Distributor O-Ring
PCV Grommet
Power Steering Hoses
PS reservoir cap seal
Oil Cap seal
PS Reservoir top of canister

Fix them in that order and odds are you will have fixed your issue.

You forgot the oil pan arch...... thought mine had a rear main seal leaking but it was the oil pan.

mobil1 oil is a great oil but it has great penetrative characteristics and will cause more drips on these older motors with older gaskets

I thought my rear main was leaking when I first got my '92. I installed a new valve cover gasket and it slowed way down, but it still leaked a little. A few months later I replaced the oil pan gasket and lifter cover gasket and the leak went away completely. Turns out the rear main wasn't leaking after all.
