For those who have owned a 22re 4x4 pickup.
I stumbled upon a few of these in my search for another T100. I have owned alot of Toyota's but never a 22re. I am curious about the pros and cons of these trucks. I am looking to either pick one of these or another T100.
Thanks

The motor is a tractor motor. Will last forever but is slow compared to other engines so you better be comfortable being in the right line.

go test drive one. The 22re has a lil less HP than the 3.0 thats in some of the T100's and even lesser than the 3.4.
Solid engine though.

The 22RE is noisy, weak, and doesn't get very good gas mileage. But I love the things. So easy to work on, so simple, and reliable as a brick.

Kind of what I figured. I had a t100 with the 3.4 it was slow but not horrible. I figured since the the 22re was in truck that is about 1200 lbs lighter it would be similar.

And expensive for any reliable extra HP.

I've only ever experienced a 22re with a roughly 7.5ish% underdrive at the diff... 5.29's and 35's. Lots of get around town pep... can do 70-75mph no problem on flat and a solid 59-64mph on an appreciable incline in 4th @ 3k ish basically WOT. Just keep it pinned and it'll work. Prolly need 3rd on steep highways.

Thats alright though.... these motors like to rev. I spin mine at idle or 3k+ 85% of the time. Wouldnt hesitate to grab 3rd gear at 4200 for an extended period of time on the mountainous highways to maintain 60.

Sweet little engines.

If you think the T100 with the 3.4L is slow, you will not be happy with a 22RE. The 22RE is a durable engine with few issues. Timing chain guides come to mind. You can squeeze a little bit more out of them with a header, head, cam, and exhaust ... but don't expect a rocket ship. To echo, they are loud, and gas mileage sucks. When traveling with a group, expect to pull up the rear, or leave a day early.

I've owned a 22RE powered 4R for over 30 years. I've learned to live with the right lane and getting passed by trucks. It is, what it is, but it's way better than the 22R I had in my 1982 short bed. You just need to accept this little engine's limitations, and budget your travels accordingly ... both with time and gas money.

Huh. I guess it’s all relative. I love driving my 4Runner. It gets good gas mileage and has plenty of power for my needs (no towing, but 35s on 4.88s). I pass people on the highway and on the east coast I don’t have any issues with mountains. I stay in the right lane.

However if you want a bed you can put sheet goods in and haul 2x the stuff just get a T100 or first gen tundra.

Ya, well, in the intermountain west/Rockies it's a different story.

Yeah I was thoroughly impressed when I went from the 3.0 4runner to the 3.4 years ago. I know have a v84runner and love it for reasons my 1stgen can’t compare too. Nothing could fill a void of a first gen tho.

Oh, and mpg and power rarely correlate right?

Are you really going to say that? You own an FJ60. Power = 0. Gas mileage = 0.
Correction... Power = 0. Gas mileage = -0.

Also, the noise level is relative. Once you've driven a Model A Ford coupe with no interior besides seats and an open piped Pontiac V8 under where the hood should be across the country, you'll know what a loud vehicle is. I've found that my new to me '86 pickup is relatively quiet for a 30+ year old stock vehicle. It's way underpowered unless you compare it to an FJ80 with a 3FE. I don't think there's a much slower modern vehicle.

But like @BlueCruiser84 said, If you're looking to haul full sized sheet goods, this ain't the truck for you. All depends on your personal purpose and tolerances.

But for reliability... my 22RE has over 430K on the clock with no rebuild and a single timing chain replacement. I reckon that speaks to the reliability.

I thought sarcasm could be detected in my statement but I guess not. Ha

I hauled LOTS of 4x8 sheet materials in my '87. Plywood, sheetrock, rigid insulation, whatever. I had a chunk of 2" XPS foam that fit over the cargo light on the back of the cab, I would lay the stuff on that as a cushion, close the tailgate and set the edge against it, ratchet strap over the top down to the cargo hooks in the front of the bed. I usually put a pair of Irwin clamps on the stack to keep them from sliding around. Many many times.

I stand corrected. I guess it really is all based on personal needs and tolerance for adapt, improvise and overcome.

Thanks for the responses,
I know they are slow. I have owned and daily driven an fj60, fj62, 80' series, T100. I know the right lane well.
We have a 2018 4runner for the long trips. which is not built yet. We are thinking of selling the 4 runner and getting into a 4x4 van, thinking maybe an early to mid 2000's short wheel base sprinter. Thats a different thread.

Back to Toyota. I know I will not be hauling much, and the truck will not be used for rock crawling or anything that. I would keep it pretty stock. Just add some better shocks and solid AT tire. It will be driven around town, daily use and smaller expo trips. Like into the sierra's, Baja mex, AZ, NM .

I really do like the T100, they have just enough tech for my needs and still have a bench seat. By tech I mean 2 cup holders that pop out of the dash .
I have owned one so was thinking it could be fun to try something new.
I have read the auto trans in the 22re is problematic, is this true. I found a good deal on one, it has an auto, if this is true, what are the issues?
Thanks
