I was looking for a 22re performance upgrade with minimal custom parts fabrication. This turbo long block was rebuilt and now has enough miles on it to consider it broken in. The vehicle this engine is in has been neglected due to its lack of forced induction. Here is my solution to the neglect.

I believe it was Downey Off Road that sold a blower kit for the 20R/22R. Doubt any are around anymore.

Inner intake is in.

Test fit everything. Make sure all of the mounting bolts are started before tightening begins.

Fuel rail and injectors are in.

The fuel injector openings needed to be beveled to insert the fuel injectors with seals. There is not enough clearance for the fuel injector electrical connectors. A file should work.

This supercharger project is getting mocked up to see where the factory parts move to. The fuel, air, electrical, and oil systems need to be adapted to the new configuration.

Should be able to get enough HP to use the AC and have something happen when the right pedal is pressed!

Replaced the front main seal and installed a new oil pump. Then, got the supercharger pulley installed.

Got my better half to machine an aluminum air adapter. Trying to use as many factory original parts as possible.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Installed a wideband oxygen sensor for AFR adjustment. This is well worth the money and is easy to do: Drill a hole in the exhaust tube, weld on the threaded bung, and screw in the O2 sensor.

The engine is running! Good idle and the supercharger sings when the right pedal is pressed.

The vehicle this engine is in moves under its own power. I will post more of the intermediate steps as time allows.

Initial air/fuel ratio was lean. No surprise there. Here are the tools needed for tuning rudimentary Toyota fuel injection in the 22re.

Timing light and 12 mm spanner for timing. Wide band oxygen sensor and Phillips-head screwdriver for air/fuel ratio. Easy-peasy.

The Phillips-head screwdriver is for adjusting the Mass Air Flow sensor. Just remember to mark the original setting (cog tooth) before making adjustments.

Installed an aftermarket oil pressure sensor. This will give the actual oil pressure being fed to the supercharger.

The supercharger oil feed and stock oil pressure sensor are located below the oil filter. The aftermarket oil pressure sensor is located to the right. Toyota threaded the holes in the block 1/8-28 BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper). These holes are not NPT or metric.

The 22re fuel injectors were not sufficient. 22rte injectors allowed me to dial in the AFR in a few minutes.

Various engine swap and forced induction approaches have been presented. How about compound forced induction for a little more variety?

Getting the CT20 factory setup working: The cracks!

Cracked CT26-1.webp

Turbo spooling is dependent on exhaust gas pressure. Cracks (exhaust leaks) are counterproductive in a turbine housing and turbo exhaust manifold. This turns these factory parts into a fix/replace game. All the CT20 turbine housings and exhaust manifolds I have encountered from the 22rte engine were cracked.

ALL 22R exhaust manifolds are cracked 😂

I think my hair dryer pushes more air than the factory original 22RTE CT20!

Factory CT20 compressor on the right. CT26 Supra compressor on the left. CT20 turbos run great with the CT26 compressor.

A fresh, rebuilt turbo for this project.

I like threads like this. I hope you actually do it. Fun project for sure. I talked to a guy at the lake that had a vintage flat bottom boat with a V-drive and Chevy V8. He had a turbo on each exhaust feeding a blower on top. Water intercooler under the blower. Looked menacing and super fast.

Fortunately, there are die-grinders, burr bits, and welders. I will post pictures when I fix the turbo exhaust manifold crack.
