Thoughts?

There should always be enough fuel in the carb float bowl to start the motor. Sounds like you have a couple things going on there, at least partially carb and partially fuel evap system problems.

I plan on pulling the carb and sending it out for a rebuild. Is there a way to go about checking the fuel evap system? I haven't tinkered with that area, or do I shot gun that by replacing all my lines? Should I also replace my charcoal canister as well?

Thanks

Do you have a stock carb? When it won't start, have you looked at the sight glass to see if fuel is in the bowl? It could well be totally unrelated to the fuel tank/system pressure. If there is fuel in the bowl and won't start, you probably have a bad accelerator pump in the carb, very common if it hasn't been rebuilt in a long time. If there is no fuel in the bowl, it could be pump related or carb related.

I have a question about venting. I hear a hissing noise coming from the filler neck whenever I have driven my 40 for about 15 minutes. Once I pull the cap it increases in noise. It seems to be pushing out. It is a Toyota cap about 7 months old. Should I even be hearing something?

Now I am just thinking. I went to gas yesterday, but didn't fill up all the way. And the 40 wouldn't start after that. I checked and I had no fuel coming from the tank to the pump. So what I am thinking is it has to build up some kind of pressure to keep the fuel moving. This also makes sense when I used to fill up my tank all the way the 40 would start and get me to my next stop, but then wouldn't start after that stop. Because it was full it had enough pressure, but after it had been driven it had lost enough pressure in it and it became starved for fuel.

My fuel pump is 9 months old.

Thoughts?

I am also going to keep looking at other possible ideas.

Paul, do you have the evap canister behind the passenger seat, mounted to the body (I think we discussed this in an earlier post)? If so, check to make sure you lines from the gas tank to the evap canister are not clogged. Also make sure the line from the evap canister to the charcoal canister is not clogged. And are you pulling a vacuum to the charcoal canister, which will then pull a vacuum on the evap canister. And is your check valve on the line from the evap canister working or mounted correctly. Also make sure you evap canister is not full of fuel.

When I installed my new tank and before I reconnected the evap canister, I had a hissing noise from the tank. I reconnected my evap canister, charcoal canister, and vacuum switching valve and the hissing went away.

If you FJ40 is with you at campus perhaps we can meet and I can take a look at your evap canister. I am at work all day which is at I-40 and Rio Grande.

I will take a look at all of that tomorrow morning and in the afternoon perhaps.

Friday morning I am going to run a compression test just to see if I have lost any compression from when I first bought it. My dad feels like it has been under powered for a while. Also picked up a head gasket tester for fun.

And Friday night I am pulling the carb and I am going to rebuild it...myself.
I have already watched these videos which make it seem like it shouldn't be too bad. https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/379609-aisan-carb-rebuilding-videos.html I think I can do it. If I must it can be sent out, but I feel like I should give it a shot.

And I should have a new sender gasket in from Toyota tomorrow, so I can check the inside of my tank.

Also has anyone used Seafoam? I read the reviews and I have gotten it worked well to its snake oil. I was thinking just a 1/3 of a can down the carb.

I also have access to another car this week, so I can take it slow.

My opinion on Seafoam. The stuff did nothing for me in the gas tank. I did notice a difference after running a can in the crankcase. The truck did run better. This was on the 4Runner.

I've rebuilt at least 3 Aisan carbs on my dining room table over the years and it's certainly not brain surjury. Just keep track of the little springs and "BBs" and make sure all the jets get into the right places. Otherwise it's a no-brainer.

Sweet I am glad to hear that. My rebuild kit should be in on Friday. And hopefully American has my gasket today. I am looking forward to giving this a shot.

Sea Foam into the carb should help out some. Make sure that the engine is nice and hot before you suck that in, SLOWLY and little at a time!

Good luck.

Ya slowly, and expect the fire department to respond. That stuff smokes.

Did a compression test this morning.

6/12/09
1) 125 2) 120 3) 125 4) 125 5) 120 6) 115

9/24/10
1) 128 2) 125 3) 115 4) 128 5) 120 6) 125

+3 +5 -10 +3 0 +10

#1 Plug White and clean
#2 2/3 White 1/3 junked
#3 Lots of junk by far the worse
#4 Less junk but second worse
#5 White crusty but not horrible
#6 Half junked some white third worst

2,3,4 there was more junk on one side than the other

Head gasket test didn't show anything.

I am thinking leak down test is next, so I can figure out what exactly is causing my drop in #3. Because I had an increase of three across the board I think it might because it was done on a different gauge, or I have a carbon build up which could be throwing my results.

Holding off on rebuilding carb until next test because I don't want to change too many variables at once. However will look into my gas tank issue this evening or weekend.

After looking at what I want to do with my forty. I have decided to take it down to the frame most likely over winter break and then carry the project through out my next couple years of college even though of course I would love to see it done by next summer. The reason for this choice is because every time I was hoping bypass an issue another one would come up. For example, I found out I have rust in my original tank, so I was going to mount my aux tank, but my exhaust was in the way. So it less time and do overs by taking it down to the frame and I can build up my forty the way I want it and not rush it.

However, to be doing this I need a car to get to school. So if anyone has a beater car they are looking to let go let me know. I am looking at the 2k mark and solely just reliable and not a jeep. I don't care if is purple and has zebra print seats and a dent in all of the doors.

Let the fun begin!:wrench:

Wow....definitely a change of route.

I can guarantee that you would get laid more in the 40 than any other vehicle sans a Porsche or a Ferrari on campus. You should have seen the chicks the Arabs at GWU got with their Ferrari's that had license plates that said "EMIRATES" on them.

In any event, interesting direction. Good luck and let us know if you need any assistance.

True on the chicas, but only think once they see a restored cruiser. I may have to leave the jump seats in to haul them all home. :grinpimp:

I know I will be needing some help in the future and that you will be seeing more of me at American for parts for sure.

DA '40 - part II

DA '40 - part II

In half the time I hope. Time to start writing up the to do list/ wish list. Most likely down to the frame get body and paint done and any other large modifications. I still need to write out a plan so I avoid do double the work in some areas.

more importantly, set the budget first as that number will set your priorities.

Nice work Onur!I know us single guys always have something on our minds, but i would not encourage this mentality to kids. Paul, I do not mean any disrespect to you, but my oldest nephew of the same name and similar age, I would not phrase it like this.

True and I still need to make up my mind if I keep my 2F or swap something else in or weld up the mounts for something else and keep my 2F.
