Axles

Yesterday and today Dan, Ali, and my father worked on rebuilding my axles. Besides having an issue with the birfields not fitting quite right it went well. Nothing a little grinding can't fix, though. I went back to stock Aisin Hubs that look much better. They need some paint, but so does my entire vehicle. Also Dan got some snapped bolts out for me, so I can finally not have to duct tap my rear lights. I learned a ton about my axles, and that I never want to break a birfield in the field, or ever in that case. The last two days have been very productive. So a big thanks to Ali and Dan.

Dan and I had to make sure everything was working fine, so we took the 40 for a little bit of a drive.

Everything works just fine.

What about the multi-use cinder block? You can block your tires and use it as a jack stand. ;)

 please don't ever use one of those as a jack stand. i've seen guys nearly crushed when the cinder block gave way. had to use airbags to lift a trailer house off one.

Paul, you have a lot to learn! A stack of 2x4's works a hell of a lot better! :hillbilly: Maybe is was our trailer leaning that sent too much blood to my head while I slept at night? Not much of a better idea!

Looks great Paul. And you just reminded me to order my 2.5" OME today! I am so glad you and I are basically have the same build in mind.

  1. lift
  2. PS
  3. Birfields
  4. Fuel solenoid shutoff
  5. new tires
  6. disk brakes at the four corners
But it is not fair that your engine if good and you already have front disk brakes. Furthermore, "we" get to learn on your FJ40 first since I am few months behind you.

Of course it is fair I made sure to find one with a good engine and front disk. ;) I am glad to hear another 40 getting a proper suspension put on it. Are you going to run skinnies? I love mine and I almost don't want power steering because of it.

Thanks Daisy. Anything going to happen to your 80 anytime soon, rims?

Paint on my wheels is high on the list of things to do.
Dual battery is up there as well.
The list goes on, well into the thousands of dollars, too bad I dont have any money right now!

Do not know yet about skinnies. I want to see yours in person before making the decision.

You also mentioned that you want to keep the stock appearance with PS. Have you seen these threads (as I recall, you already have your PS stuff though)

I look forward to seeing them painted. It should give a fresh look to that vehicle.

You are more than welcome to take a look at mine. I think they add the right appearance on the vehicle. 40's never had very wide tires, and plus the wider you go the more you look like a heep.

I am really liking that 80 pump. All I need know is a 100 series power steering cooler and I will have a bit of steering from every series. (40 column, 60 box, 70 tie-rod, 80, pump, and a one hundred cooler.)

Paul:

Now that you've had it on the highway--is the steering much better? Your hubs should cool considerably in not too long.

Did you guys find the missing tail light cover?

Andrew: we should talk one of these days. I understand you were considering mini-PS for originality? Along with the 2F/tranny/Tcase, we pulled the complete 40 series PS off the 40 (the factory PS box and 3B starter are in the same place, so the PS had to go).

The 40 moves down the free way just fine, but at higher speeds the steering becomes a bit absent. Also when the speedometer says 50 mph it is really going 60 mph, because of the new tires. Need to get that adjusted.

We drove around and didn't see it, so I am not sure on that one. I doubt someone grabbed it before we made it back around, but who knows?

I like the power steering cooler Dan and I pulled off a Mercedes 300 diesel. The thing is fairly large, and if I ran a loop with one it; it would work very well I think.

The PRM-1200 looks like a winner to me. You can buy basically the same thing at NAPA, but without any tabs for mounting it?!?!? Try making something to attach the top loop of it when it's already fastened to the fins. I'm still not sure how I'm going to do that.

The Mercedes PS cooler is BIG. I like the idea of it, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it work on the 40. It is nearly as tall as the radiator core support!

Dan

Glad your 40 is back on the road Paul. Sorry I had to leave early on Tuesday but a super early flight on Wed didn't leave me much room.

I drove a 40 on the Dusy Ershim trail this week and it's been a blast. These things are VERY nimble with the proper suspension and tires, to say the least.

Ash:

You missed the fun of buttoning it back up. I like the jobs that are easier and have fewer hassles. Dad's 40 front axle will be like that (aside from painting, powder coating and all), and it turns out my 45 has large pattern knuckles already--so easy!

Paul: you guys able to come up either monday afternoon or tuesday morning to set the tub on the frame?

No worries at all. The second day went really quick. It was truly just bolting everything back together and getting a couple broken bolts out. Glad to hear you having fun in a 40.

Dan- My dad and I can be up at the shop by 8 on Tuesday morning if that works for you. If you want us there early or later that is no problem, just let us know.

Old Man Strength Wins Again

Well I am home for the weekend from school and I am already getting dirty from my Land Cruiser. I needed to do my front end aliment, so my dad and I got started on it. I had been PB Blasting it for a couple weeks and then we put a pipe wrench on the tie-rod and I gave it a try and it didn't budge, so my dad gave it a shot and of course he got it first try. All I could say was "old man strength." I am not quite done with it yet because I have to pull out the tie-rod ends to give them equal distants before putting them back in, because one side it screwed in all the way in. Also I am pulling the seat belts right now to rework them, so they function better, or I might buy these. They look pretty close. I also found this website that does redoes the decals on the buckles. I don't want to use CCOT because I saw some in another 40 today and they looked pretty faded and they just don't match the style as well as these. Any suggestions?

Also I have decieded to pull all my doors and fully refinish them so they will function at the highest quailty. I have to replace the felt in the doors, window seals, and the weather stripping, so why put all this work in to the doors to only take it all off again just to paint? So hopefully in the next few weeks my doors will be sent out for blasting, and I will get to learn how to shoot paint. I understand that my doors will be a different color from my vehicel, but at least the color is somewhat similar.

Also working on a couple of slick security ideas. After those go in and I get my steering back together and my doors back. The 40 will finally move to UNM with me!

All opinions welcomed.

We bought new seat belts from SOR. They haven't faded at all, about 4 years later.

Painting is a very good skill to learn. Are you going to rattle can the doors, or what? If you have them blasted, you could have them epoxy prime them as well for you.

Dan

I cannot recommend the seat belts from CCOT.

everything from CCOT fades...BAD. my front fender park light is almost white. i have the Crow 4 point belts from SOR and they are doing great too.
