Proper Big Brake Kit...who would be interested?

I have a contact with Baer who can theoretically get a BBK prototyped for the 80 series. I just need a show of hands to see who might be interested in this type of upgrade. This is not going to be a big blingy-type system so I will be exploring every cost-effective option...from something as simple as a floating 2-piece rotor with stock calipers on new brackets to a full-on 6-piston monoblock full floating setup...whatever yields the best bang for the buck. I would think that a $2k budget is reasonable, given the audience, with upgrades available a la carte.

Feedback and input are welcome as this is only in the conceptual stage.

Just curious on the bigger part, most of us running stock 16 inch wheels and intend to stay that way. How much bigger can the brake system get with out needing bigger wheels? From what I can tell stock caliper is already fairly close to stock rims.

This setup has to fit under stock wheels or the target market will be tiny. The stock wheels have decent clearance for brakes. While larger diameter brakes would be nice, I think wider rotors are where we will have to go to pick up extra thermal capacity. That and increased swept area.

This is all speculation until the wheel/brake clearance is actually measured, but I have seen many 13" brakes fit inside 16" wheels. It may require ditching 4 piston calipers and going with 2 piston sliding calipers, but if the net effect is increased braking power and fade resistance, I think it will be an upgrade.

A company like Baer will have every rotor size in 0.1" increments so we can cram as big a rotor as will physically fit. Here's my list of design goals:

-13"x1.25" ish Rotor to fit in stock 16" wheels
-4-6 piston calipers provided enough clearace
-Option to upgrade to larger rotor if your wheels permit
-Easily sourced pads
-2-piece floating rotors to help prevent warping

Never had any problem with my stock system. It will lock up a set of 35's if I want it too. Should be interesting to see if there are any takers on this. I am assuming the market will be guys running well past 37's and/ or lots of towing and trailering in the mountains.

I'd be interested.... the OEM setup with upgraded rotors/pads isn't bad but..... depends on pricing.

I had a 380mm Mov'it kit on my old A8 that was amazing...... would love that sense of capability for the truckster ( as best as can be had for a 6k lb rig...)

I had a Big Brake Kit on my RS4 and was crazy expensive. It really was a big improvement over an already great stopping car but when I pushed over 500hp I felt it needed it. That being said, the thing I did hate about it was that it nixed the e-brake which really sucked. It changed how we parked it pretty radically. Not saying the same will happen with the 80s but just something of note.

I've been down the road of very expensive brake upgrades as well. However, I'm approaching this one a little differently. I'm trying to stay with an off-the shelf caliper of moderate price and a big floating rotor. Besides, this is Baer, not Brembo, Movit, AP, PF or any other high $$ bling brand.


If pricing ends up being crazy i'll explore just having brackets made to adapt stock calipers to a 13x1.25" rotors.

Interested with cash to do this if there's a non-exotic way to net some real world changes - the boat especially taxes the system & I've had a few "too close for comfort" moments, I'd have wadded a passenger car on occasion if I was ever a cel phone / _________ distraction participant.

I'm part of that "gotta stay behind the OE 16" wheel people too - I like the 16" wheels!

Especially since I'm adding the TRD twin-screw I really think my brakes could use whatever you can do to help us stop these pigs.

VERY interested in your findings/results & the $$ levels for any differing options!!

I can "test mule" too for an idea of ~4K+ of trailered weight - just offering.

Those look very similar to stock toyota calipers. I would lean towards using the stock 4 piston caliper with aggressive pads and a 13x1.25" floating rotor before going that route.

Brakes will be a project after my cooling system projects. I'm interested only because I will be spending $1k + on OEM and if this setup is only a little bit more, I'll bite.

This is the third "big brake" thread I've seen in the 80 series section over the years and it always comes back to this: 80 series brakes are awesome! I could lock em' up running 38's no problem, but I also went through the expense, and really proper maintenance of replacing the 20+ year old parts in the system. New master, booster and all new calipers and rotors.
