Ford towers, cut by FC Fabs to spec. A number of threads in the 40 forum and on Pirate.

Looks like I could do that with a port-a-band saw. What does notching them out like that gain you? Can you get away with not having to trim the inner fender to clear the shocks? What 'spec' are you referring to?

Dan

Based on what I can tell, it brings the towers more inboard and thus likely less trimming of the inner fender, yet still being able to clear the SAG steering on the DS. This is what Don @ FC Fabrications does with all the 40 series Ford towers, thus it is his spec. I trust his judgement based on the sheer volume of these which he has done, without failure.

OK, on to the steering wheel...have already ordered the Ididit black PC tilt column. What say ye, Mud, about the three choices? #1 is Momo Tuner Silver, #2 is the Momo Tuner Black, and #3 is Momo Competition.

Leaning towards #1, but still open to ideas. I will be going with VDO Vision Black gauges on a TrailCandy panel, with the cluster and pocket will be OEM silver...though I have a line on #3 for around $100, which is a smoking deal.

I like 1 and 3, so either. I had a Momo sports wheel on my BJ42 with stock power steering and it was a little tough to turn. I'd even go so far as to say a little odd with such a small wheel/less ourchase on a big hunk o' Toyota wheel to grab onto. Will the Ididit take a stock pre-'68 era [?] wheel?

She is a roller, though I am not. Don has a set of 30" donors on the rig to move her around the shop, and will put on a set of 37s to see how those look shortly.

On a personal note, I was hit by a snowboarder on Wednesday and broke my femur. Add one titanium rod and a few screws to the mix, and I am "back together" six-million-dollar-man style. Painful, yes, and just trying to do the simple things in life is not easy. Taking it day by day and looking forward to a regular nights sleep and such.

Ouch dude. Best of luck with a speedy and successful recovery.
All kinds of rough news in the 45 world it seems.

But congrats on the progress on a killer 45!!! Looks great.

Steve,
Sorry to hear about your leg, hope you heal soon. I am at the point on my 65' FJ45 build of needing shocks, I like the Bilstiens and was hoping you could share your part #'s with me, my truck is SOA also. Your rig looks great, can't wait to see the final product.

Unless your suspension is identical to Steve's, I'd highly recommend you don't just order the same shocks.
Best way to figure out the proper shock part number is to pick up one corner of your rig with a forklift ( or cherry-picker ) until one of the other tires leaves the ground. Then measure your fully collapsed and fully extended distances for the shocks. Look up the proper shock part # and order them. Summit and 4wp usually have them in stock at a decent price.

The rig made it out into the sun today for a few hours to get her DMV weight cert. :grinpimp: Sitting on a set of borrowed 37's from Don's Piggie, who looks pretty sad with the shop 31's in the last shot. Not that the Duck will end up with tires that large, she does sit purdy. :hillbilly:

Well it has been a quiet month with the build, as Don is on a few other projects. Should be back under the knife shortly...either the cage or bobbing the bed.

I finally did get my registration sorted. It only took eight months and five visits to the DMV to get all of the proper paperwork, weight certificate, CHP sign-off, etc. But in the end the truck is registered, and the personalized plates are perfect for the build.

On the personal front, I have moved to just a single crutch, and should move on to a cane in about two weeks. Now, I just need to get the leg strong enough to push the clutch in and out, doh!

One thing I did do in the last month was Cruise Moab...here are two of my favorite still-shots from both days while following 45's.

Well, Don is now cutting, bending and welding tubing for the cage, and moving sheetmetal as necessary.

Fuel tank will be between the frame rails / exterior, so the filler had to go to make way for the B-Hoop

How about that curve?

More shots to come as they flow from Don

How is the leg going?

The Physical Terrorist (I mean Therapist) had me going up and down stairs today without a cane or crutch...up = "OK", down = "Oh :censor:!" More work to be done getting stability in the knee and strength / memory back in quite a few muscle groups. I can push the clutch in on my Audi and drive it to work though, so at least that is progress.

Good to hear that your progressing, A mate of mine broke his femur a few years ago while we were riding dirt bikes through the bush, it took him a while to get back to normal. He had a limp in that leg for something like 2 years but you can't tell anymore. Good that you can drive and push the clutch in :steer:
