Prep is everything, so I took about 9 hours on Saturday and wire wheeled, scraped and sanded the frame and firewall. I didn't take this kind of time when I restored my first LV and wished I had later. Tried to get the rattle can paint as smooth as I could.

Gene:

That looks fantastic! Amazing how nicely that LV cleaned up. I can't wait to see it in person.

BTW--I'm in the basic first bits of packing (because I have to work solid before I get to head out that way) for the work weekend. Should I bring any tools?

Dan

this may be a touch late but my lv has the same hole in the same place as wilma, mine doesn't look owner done unless he took some time but with part of the dash hacksawed out i doubt that . sorry no pics...

not sure if its been posted but whats the colour scheme of the new lv going to be? same as the old or? i really dig the colour on the jimiwagon but not cool to steal someone elses colour scheme :p

What the hell.. I thought the firewalls came black from the factory..

The FJ35 firewalls came WHITE from the factory.

I can say that cause nobody knows squat about the 35's. :flipoff2:

UPDATES [sorry my computer time has been basically non-existant]

1. I added some names to the list from what I picked up on the thread or heard on the phone. If I've missed you, please CALL me to add.

2. As I've explained to Gene, my basic plan is this:
a.Sat morning first off, I'd like to get the LV off the ground in the front yard onto concrete blocks just inboard of the leaf springs. Get the old axles out, the hangers cleaned and the new axles under the rig. I would like to have a 4 man crew on this. [If you have an extra floor jack or some cement blocks you could bring, that would be great. I prefer that over jack stands.]

b. two man crew stripping off the old steering components, cleaning as necessary and transferring in the steering components from Gene's old LV, which were all rebuilt or replaced. [If you have something like a cement mixing tub for scraping/cleaning parts in, that would be good]

c. two man crew to pull the oil pan off Gene's old motor, check bearings and glue on the replacement oil pan. I'm thinking calfj60 and kellyo for this project.

d. four man crew [dhondagod and colangut to lead] to map out and cut sub panels and reinforcements for interior sheetmetal replacement. If you don't mind dealing with grinder shavings, that would be great. I think Temecula Tim and 909 would be great on this.;)

e. one person to help Gene with laying out the wire harness under the dash.

f. three or four 'floaters' to deal with various smaller projects that don't fall into any specific category, but which may include being a go-fer.

g. Calico Kid has generously volunteered to bring an a Dodge service truck with a generator to take care of most of our power needs for Saturday. I'm pretty sure we will meet the goal of getting the rig rolling and steering by the end of the day. Maybe we will even have some sheetmetal tacked into place. That way we can spend the day Sunday with the truck closer to the service bay [and the 'big' welder [if you haven't seen my shop, you'll understand better when you're there]

3. Bring your own drinks, a chair, a hat and sunscreen. I will bring an ezup awning, but we could probably use a second one. I will also bring a barBQ in case people want to cook. Most people will bring extra food and drink to share, but coming prepared doesn't hurt.

4. So far the only quote I got for bringing in a portable toilet was $125.00. If anyone's got a better lead on this, please let me know. Trying to stretch the budget as far as possible. Haven't 'heard' anything on the other stuff I posted in the 'wanted' section yet. PLEASE don't count on me to keep up with reading all the threads right now.

5. I plan to go to Gene's on Saturday to pull the engine, steering and the leaf springs out of the old LV. We still have to evaluate what we're gonna do with the OME's in the rear. I spoke with Marv about possibly getting some newer stock 45 main leaves to stuff the rest of the OME's under, but we won't really be able to evaluate that until we get them out from under the rig.

Oh, and if anyone knows of a cheaper source for 16ga sheet before I make a trip to IMS.....

Mark,

I have some canadien 1 ton rear springs with factory overloads.I will gladly donate to the project if someone can pick them up in the bay area.

Mark:

Glad to see the plan is coming together.

Call me crazy, but I'm more than happy to help with the electrical stuff. After rewiring the faux-lux, and a few turbine engines, I'm not phased by much of that.

But really, whatever is most helpful.

Dan

Mark,

I gave you a call this moring. Just to let you know ill be able to make it and you could put me down on helping put the axles under and what ever else is to do. I could bring my floor jack and some stands if i have some etra around

Mark or Georg are going to have to let me know if I should bring them or not. I'm not loading them and hauling them for the heck of it.
