I wanted to try recreating the SST because my breaker bar didn’t fit well against the frame and knew I’d to tighten the nut at some point....before @OTRAMM revealed his magic at least.

Got the HB nut off! Got all the bolts out of the timing gear cover but could not get the cover itself off...ugh. The bolts are all nicely organized in order 😀 stuck in a piece of cardboard. I tried prying the cover off but couldn’t get under the flange. Rubber mallet? Other tricks?

make sure you got every bolt out of the timing gear cover.
A stiff putty knife or wide-ish wood chisel with flat side againstthe block and gentle taps across the top until it "pops", then the putty knife and or screw driver to work it around.

Front shackles replaced. I couldn't find definitive torque specs for the pins and shackles. I saw 37-58 and 67. They seemed plenty tight short of 50 so I just left them there. I assume you don't really want to squeeze them down to the point they're restricting the bushings from flexing a bit.

So I finally got the two things needed to work on the 40, time and money. Yesterday, I received a complete gold cadmium bolt kit from Overland Metric, ripped out my interior to finally see what was under the floor mat (wasn’t pretty, but I knew that), and ordered a new OME suspension kit and front axle rebuild kit from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters. Today I’m going to remove the front axle and put it on the bench awaiting the new parts. Will update with more pics...

You need a 6 lug swap...since those won't fit I can take them off your hands for you no charge

Oh, I know :hillbilly:
I was just loading them into the truck to get them dismounted so I can mount them on my Pro Comp beadlocks :grinpimp:.

I'll let these go for a very good price.

Hopefully I’m not boring you all but finally uncovered the Crown Jewels tonight and got it resealed and torqued. Both the front main rubber seal and cork timing cover gasket were petrified into solid piece of rock. First pic is prior to cleaning it all up.

Did you use my technique for removing the cover?
Make sure you put the key back in the crank shaft.

I didn’t have a wood chisel or putty knife but your suggestion did make me think to go wider and thinner. Got it started along a 6” run with a utility knife which let me get a flat head in. Key is back in but not visible in the photo

My son and me installing 3 pounds of Italian honey bees in our apiary yesterday. We installed 2 packages so back up to 4 hives. I may end up splitting the 2 hives that made it through the winter but I won't get a lot of honey out of them if I do that. I probably have another couple weeks before I need to make that call though.

Very cool! Between the bears and colony collapse disorder we could never get our hives really rolling. We did build a stout high voltage bear fence before moving to NM. We’ll try again when we move back.

Got my front axle out and onto the motorcycle lift. Wasn’t easy to handle with one person but by using two jacks was able to git r dun. New suspension and parts for the front axle rebuild arrive on Monday.
