I pulled my 40 in to the garage since it looks like we're going to have a few weeks of home projects ahead of us. Plan is to replace all the spring bushings and pins. I have the 40 supported by jack stands on the frame just before the front pins. The question is what's next. I've read I need to take some pressure off the spring by using a floor jack on the axle. How much should I lift the axle or is this a feel thing? Are either the pins or shackles easier to do first? Should I do both at the same time? Here's my setup.

Ambitious project!
Lift her just enough to take the weight of the axle.
Neither pins nor shackles are easy 😂

Seriously, I've done too many of these rolling around on the floor like you are about to. Need a lift and a BFH!

Yeah the last time I had my rear springs apart I had to re-assemble with worn bushings. I now (hopefully!!) have the correct bushings and am thinking about getting at it today. Temps supposed to be high sixties today so a good weather day temp-wise to work! Having had it apart within the last two years and keeping it lubricated, mine shouldn't be too bad.
If you're removing the front pins for the first time and know that you have proper replacements you might think of heating the hell out of the spring eye/pin/frame bracket interface to soften the rubber in the bushings. Usually makes it easier to get the pin out. Beware that when the rubber in the bushings gets real hot it smokes and stinks! These can be a real PITA, most times I have a prybar in one hand and the BFH in the other hand while doing this. Good luck!

My clutch is groaning after the 40 is warmed up. It doesn't make any sound for the first few minutes of operation. What problem does this sound like to you?
Have a listen:

I was too enthralled by your socks to listen to the clutch.

Got the front PS spring pin swapped. My bushings came out easy. No rubber to metal fusing. Of course I thought I had replacement shackles but I only have the bushings so I got those ordered. I assume I don't want to start on the other side with the front shackle removed right? Or will it be ok?

Just finished installing my ditch light brackets from Massive Metal Shop. I don't have any lights to put on them though. I'll order some tonight.

Sweet, good job!
If the frame is supported, you should have no problem starting with the other side as well.

Another unboxing and picked up a harmonic balancer puller from advance auto. Was also able to get the studs out (double nut method worked great). I was able to install the first new parts finally.....just the thermostat and associated gaskets.

When I tried to pull the harmonic balancer nut the holding tool I got is too tight so I’ll knock a little material off. I ordered an angle grinder to do the fan shroud mod but it hasn’t come yet some I’m held up until it does.

I also ordered all the heater bypass hoses, oil cooler hoses, and the correct clamps from Toyota.
