I rebuilt two power steering pumps, and both made the ticking noise after reinstalling them in the trucks. Both noises eventually went away, one took a day and the other took a week. Even with the tick noise the power steering was working fine... (replaced the sealed shaft bearings in both as well)

So, do you think it won't harm nothing leaving it like that? :hhmm:

I would give these guys a call;

free shipping is always nice and we get a discount, they are very knowledgeable as to the workings of our cruisers. I needed the part number for an oring and they found the part I needed in less than a minute I would highly recomend them. Good luck

Sent from my busted to s*** EVO4G

Thanks, I'll give them a shot.

If the power steering is working and no leaks, then I would run it a few hundred miles and then re-investigate then. Could be that the gears are bedding in with each other...

I'll leave it like that then. I'm tire to clean my driveway of ATF.
Thanks.

My noise didn't go away till I got a new gear. Its amazing how just a tiny nick in the gear can make such a noise even after it has been polish down real well.

Not sure if you left damaged gear in too long if it would start to mar up the main gear, that would suck.

I think there is a way to try main gear. Take the ps pump out and its gear out as well. Then, fix it back to its position without the gear. Start the engine without driving the truck, and without moving steering wheel also. If the sound remains main gear has been scratched.
Please, correct me if I'm not right.

What exacy did this sound like? Ive got a noise that kind of sounds like its top end like a valve. But all my clearances are good on the valves. Thing runs great the sound just sounds terrible

Its not that hard to remove the pump. If the noise goes away then you know it the pump.

Front timing cover have to come off?

No. The pump mounts to the back side. Search the FAQ and you should find a nice write up on it.

I changed out two pumps thinking that was the cause of the knocking sound and it was a scratched gear. This thread saved me from tearing into my timing cover. Big thanks!

Going through same issues with the lx . New power steering pump , lines. Removed pump and knock still exists. Does timing cover need to come off to remove and replace main gear?

He Everyone, I have what I believe is this same loud tick/ quiet knock. I just removed the pump and ran the truck for a sec with nothing on it. Still have the noise. Sooo I am guessing it is the drive gear. Has anyone changed one of these? I did the timing chain on a previous 1fz fe and it was very not fun. Possibly I could hand crank the engine and inspect the drive gear?

The oil pump drive gear is banging back and forth because of excess wear on the pump/chain cover.
It could be due to a ding on the pump gear. Take a close look at it. Maybe try changing it.
If it is not the pump gear causing the drive gear oscillation, then you are looking at changing out the front cover, which means taking the head off and oil pan. A PITA.

Reviving old threat. Did the ticking from the gear sound anything like this?

No, My damage was very minor and sounded like a bad lifter, but only had a couple damaged teeth(barely). That sounds like a ps pump without fluid! It sounds bad!
