First off, I miss my old red 40.
I drove it daily whenever I didn't have my ass plastered to a patrol car seat!
Sold it when the first child was born, and still regret it:(

That said, I was gainfully employed as a LEO, and could afford the ugly fuel economy, poor parts availability (had another POV as well) and live in Fla. where other than the rain, the weather is pretty good year round.
And this was in early 80's as well, so fuel wasn't ridiculous then either.

For a college student, I would have to agree that you need to stay somewhere between 7-8k and set the rest aside.
Are you going to be employed while in school?
You need to consider fuel, parts, repairs, etc when considering one of these rigs.
I would probably look past the cool factor and look more toward the conservative side.

Then again...it depends a lot on how far and the conditions you'll be living in.
Mine leaked like a sieve and was hot in the summer, and cold in the winter. If you will be in moderate climates year round, it might not be so bad.

Fuel economy sucks on these rigs, but again, if your average commute is less than 10 miles a day, it probably wouldn't hurt so much.

If you're going to see a lot of highway time, again you might consider another vehicle.

The up side is, these rides are fun, plain and simple! They're unique, fun to operate, and just make you feel good!
I intend on finding another one when finances (and space) allow it.
In the meantime, I'm almost DD'ing an fj62. Now econocar by any stretch (lol)

And finally, parts.
They're not cheap, and not always locally available.

As for the Jeep, remember where you're asking:lol: and forget what anyone says negatively about them.

For a DD, they're everywhere, parts are available anywhere, easy to work on, relatively cheap to buy and maintain, and still a ton of fun to drive.
I see them all over the college campuses here!

All the best with your decision and let us know what you find?

FYI- there was one on here recently for around 5-6k. If it's still on the board, I'd take a serious look at it.
I don't have the $$$ handy, or it'd probably already be gone:)

You can definitely find something in good condition under $10,000. Honestly I would try to find one that is fairly original and mostly rust free somewhere in the $8000 dance and see if they would be wiling to set the other $2,000 aside for any maintenance or additions you would like to make to the 40.
Just so you know, they are loud and slow. Yet one of my favorite things to drive! It's an awesome rig and will get you anywhere!

I'm sure you might catch some flack for considering a jeep on this forum...;)

Go landcruiser, not enough young guys drive 40's anymore. Every 18-22 year old gets a jeep..

Good luck!

Drive my FJ every day, lucky enough to have sun ALL the time. Finished up some nice long trail loops then drive to work. Love it... :steer:

more reliable then cars i owned a tenth of his age haha

top may go on soon for some longer trips.

GREAT looking rig..I wish my wife liked this color..it's what I want to paint my in the worst way..She wants a sliver/pewter color...I know..I'm whipped.

Nice rig, my 81 lives over by Sabino, good to see tucson represented here.

Daily driver for seven years in Australia and six months so far in America. MUCH cheaper to drive here though and so much more pleasant without all the cameras watching me.

I've driven fj40 cruisers ever since I got my licence at 15 1/2. I can drive other cars, like my wife's diesel Jeep liberty...but why would I? Given a choice between tasty American micro brew and a nasty Budweiser, I'll drink micro brew all the time. Life is too short to drive Budweiser cars.

Hey, How much hassle was it getting the LX to the US? Do you get many request to sell it over there.

Easy-peasy. PM me and I can handle it for you if you bring one over. I'm a lawyer but you don't need to be to do the import. When in Adelaide I sent over many Cruisers. There is strong demand for them here, especially diesel.

Not quite daily driven yet, and definitely not "clean," (still working the kinks out) but this one comes out on the weekends every now and then :steer:
