Hey guys I'm looking into buying a Fj40. I just turned 18 and will be headed off to a small 4 year university. Anyway my parents offered to buy me my first car. The budget is $10,000. Im looking for one that does not have rust and could make it through college. Do you think its possible? Where do I need to look? I have looked at ebay but the ones under $10,000 are in crap condition. Sorry if this is not the right thread to post this on, but I wanted to talk to people who DD there Fj40. Thanks in advance.

Your parents are generous and you must be a great son. Congrats on your higher learning ambitions.

To be honest with you, as far a $10,000 budget for a FJ40 daily driver can probably happen but know that this will require a lot of time and money to keep a 30+ year old rig rolling reliably. Fuel is another concern as the cost keeps going up. These rigs are not exactly economical.
I love and enjoy driving,working and improving my 82. I do use mine as a daily driver even though I own several fuel injected vehicles. The feeling I get driving this machine is priceless, but in reality it come with a heavy cost compared to my Sierra 25000 duramax.
I don't want to discourage you from pursuing your dream. I just think you should consider all options as a young man going to collage would need reliable transportation.

Thank you for an honest assessment. Im also looking at a Jeep wranger as well. Im old school at heart. The design and everything about the Fj40 I love. I will definitely keep my options open .

You can definitely find something in good condition under $10,000. Honestly I would try to find one that is fairly original and mostly rust free somewhere in the $8000 dance and see if they would be wiling to set the other $2,000 aside for any maintenance or additions you would like to make to the 40.
Just so you know, they are loud and slow. Yet one of my favorite things to drive! It's an awesome rig and will get you anywhere!

I'm sure you might catch some flack for considering a jeep on this forum...

Go landcruiser, not enough young guys drive 40's anymore. Every 18-22 year old gets a jeep..
