mine is on the drivers floorboard in front of the drivers seat, watch the mounting to allow for seat movement, but I tried everything and for me this was the best location where it wasn't going to get hit and was easily accessed. I had one in my old super duty that saved it burning after a tranny seal failure cause a fire.. ill never be without a fire ext.

Here are some photos. Seems my skills need some work. Recommend placing the top towards the rear to keep the handle from catching on stuff and the mechanism will be protected.

I'm wondering if there is anyplace to mount a small extinguisher inside the engine compartment. Too cold and too late to go look tonight, but since that's where you'd most likely need to use it, might save time already having one up there.
The first part of your question is negated by the second ;) Seriously though - if there's a fire under the hood, that'd be last place you'd want to be locating, touching, unlatching anything. You'd want that extinguisher A) where you can get to it quickly and B) specifically where you don't think the fire will originate.

On that note, I was talking to a friend who's a firefighter with Atlanta FD. I asked him about the extinguishers we (not firefighters) carry with us -and when to use them... and not use them. He said, unless the fire is just getting started OR there are people still in the vehicle... don't bother. Cars make for some nasty (!) fires - the plastics and metals used can put off some dangerous smoke/fumes and can be extremely difficult to put out with a small extinguisher.

I'm also curious of mounting locations. Anyone tried driver side cubby under the left side of the drivers seat? Seems like there is plenty room there. This would be in immediate access to the driver.

The most important factor is speed. If you suspect a possible fire, you have to have the extinguisher in your hand already. Under the front of one of the front seats would normally be the fastest for a person sitting up front. The rear door threshold is not bad if you are not sitting in the front seat (like being a bit away from the vehicle). The rear, cargo area, under the ceiling, seems to costly timewise (in addition to any problems with it coming loose).

And, as said above here, use only for saving lifes. Or before something "real" has caught fire.
The powder used in extinguishers is very corrosive over time, and will eat any kind of elecronic or electric device, eat cables, and generally cause corrosion. SO even if you save your car at first, it will die after a year. There are new types of foam now, which are good for fires in oil as well, and can take temps down to minus 30 C.

While it's not the most immediately accessible, the easy solution: my 2.5lb halotron extinguisher fits perfectly inside the factory jack/toolkit location and mounts with the same rubber strap. I relocate the tools to the long narrow compartment(that has been empty in both my 100 series cruisers) on the opposite side.

Fire Extinguisher Bracket- Amazon

Fire Extinguisher- Lowes

Not a great picture but you can get the idea. I bought u-bolts from lowes and attached the bracket to the 3rd row grab handle. I think I used 3 u-bolts. Then I mounted the extinguisher with the included metal strap to the bracket and put on some long hook and loop straps to help with rattles. I installed it earlier this spring and it hasn't moved, lots of spirited driving on dirt roads as well. This is how @Odyseuss mounted his a while back and he is still happy with it as well. He has better pictures in his build, here it is.

slacker24-7: Just what I was thinking! How did you mount (to existing, or newly drilled holes, or...)?
in my case, I crawled under it to check for any hoses etc, then used 2 self tapping screws for the mount.. just move your seat as far forward as you think you may ever want it then use that location

Some of these locations are highly visible to passers by... like bored teenage male passers by. They scream "Hey, look! Here's something to play with. Just break this window and pull the pin!"

Most likely, the fire won't be your own vehicle. Another vehicle, structure, campfire, etc is more likely.

The small extinguishers we are mounting in our trucks are good to have, but are only good for a short blast to put out a small fire.

What extinguisher are people using, what type and what did it cost?

Cold Fire. If you use a regular fire extinguisher in your vehicle - it's a write-off.

Kidde Auto FX5 II, about $35 at Walmart, and it's a class 5B:C designed for fires you might encounter with vehicles (gasoline, oil, electrical, etc..)

Not in favor of chemical type extinguisher for a vehicle-very messy. They are ok for kitchen or campsite fire but prefer clean agent type
around electrics and other mechanical equipment.

I mounted mine in front of the second row seats. Custom bracket that just slips under the center seat mount. No drilling or bolting required. Simply loosen seat bolts (remove center bolts) and place bracket over seat floor mount. Replace center bolts.
Camo cover made from cheapo towel from Walmart.
Amerex 5 lb. Halotron, model B386. Cost $197 from Cintas
ORS Quick Release. Cost about $65
Bracket - free, made from materials on hand.

Thanks for posting up @nnnnnate. I remember that you followed @Odyseuss' install. I think the 3rd-row grab handle might be a decent location. Do you happen to have any photos of how you installed the bracket using u-bolts? I'm sure I could figure it out, so am just asking.

Also, since @LandCruiserPhil is coming out w/ a rack using those for mount locations, I wonder how an extinguisher might integrate with that. (hint, hint)

For reference, here's a photo of @LandCruiserPhil's prototype attic rack for late model 100s, which looks super clean btw.

Although it would be strong enough, for safety reasons I would not put anything on an Attic Rack over ~2 lbs or sharp.

Thanks for the posting the pic
