What other FJ40 radio years will fit in this space?

This is what im working with now.

Thanks

Someone bent your tabs and drilled holes in them so you'll need to bend them back if you put in a radio

haha.. I thouth it didnt look right.... didnt want to start bending/pulling things until I researched things a bit more..

will a 1972 radio fit in the 1975 dash mounts?

What years will work in the dash? 1972 - 1977?

Thanks

I believe there is a later radio from 80 or so that is AM/FM, but still mono. Anything originally in an fj40 will fit, regardless of year.

There are a couple originally from a Celica on ebay, not sure if they will fit.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Fuj...Parts_Accessories&hash=item233ac23bc5&vxp=mtr

And this older ebay auction:

http://www.ebay.fr/itm/1975-1976-19...cruiser-Fujitsu-Ten-AM-FM-Radio-/330751445161

claims this part number will fit in an fj40: 86120-12270

Toyota parts zone says it's for a Corolla.

Lots of links and info on older radios in this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/need-help-with-an-original-ten-radio.783037/

The first radio Fast Eddy has linked will fit properly. The second one would not. To re-phrase, both of those radios will fit in the radio hole in a 40. But only the first one will fit the original face piece.

You see, that is the trick. Most of the ebay radios do not have the trim piece on them. Many of the early Celica, Corolla and Pickup radios will fit, but the trim face was part of the entire plastic dash in those vehicles. On a 40 the trim face is a separate piece unique to the 40, like the pictures above. If you have the face from an FJ40 AM radio, you can use it on an AM/FM radio if the dial studs are in the right spot.

The AM/FM radio from a 60 series will fit in the hole of a 40 also, but the face will not fit, nor will the face from a 60, it is bigger and if you cut it down it screws it all up.

The trick to getting a radio to fit the factory face piece is the studs have to be in the down and tight position. I have found there are two variations on the old AM and AM/FM radios. FJ40, and the Celica and Corolla and stuff have the down and tight to the preset button knobs. The FJ60 and some others are higher and farther out on the front of the case. Again, the first radio Fast Eddy linked to is down and tight, the second is more centered and spread further apart, you can see the difference.

I'm using my original face on an AM/FM radio I got on ebay, the opening is just a tad tight on the frequency numbers, but functions fine. Had to grind the back of the knobs down a bit, face is thicker than the original dash plastic that it would have been mounted in.

I'm convinced that this radio would fit okay: http://www.retrosound.com/product-p/faceplates.htm You can pick any of the retro sound radios, the key is the Euro Mini face plate, I think that should fit a 40 perfectly, as I have linked. Someone needs to try it, because it looks like a nice option.

Did the power and speaker cables just plug into the am/fm radio?

That retrosound seems like an ok option. If I was doing something different I think I'd just go for an out-of-sight option that connected via stereo jack to a phone.

You asking me Eddy?

I got it on Ebay, the seller was kind enough to include the original plugs and some wire on the them, he also wrote out the wire functions, although they are not hard to figure out. On the unit I got, it had one T shape plug for power, but the ground opening was blank. I simply slid my flat spade from my harness right on the power spade.

For the speakers, they are another T shaped plug, but two parallel spades for left and right, and one flat spade for ground, the left and right ground come together on the one spade at the original plug. I just spliced onto that with a 4way trailer plug, and then I got a trailer light harness that runs the brown wire with one yellow and one green wire, 20 foot long, it was a "Y" harness kit. I'm going to run that under the truck and back up in the rear corners with the wiring harness. Should make for a clean install and it has nice weather resistant plugs. Ran the plug out into the engine compartment where the rear harness plugs in, then it will separate there like stock.

I think you could get away with just flat spades on all the terminals, maybe put some heat shrink tube on them to insulate them from each other and wire up your own speakers.

I just purchased an AM/FM that supposedly was for an FJ40. The radio was built in 1980 but doing further research on this site I find that it was probably was originally for a Corolla. It fit in the dash just fine, however, as it was a two speaker set up and I have gone back to original in this 1975, I have just one speaker. The audio shop I had install this says they bench tested the radio and found no reception in either AM or FM. When I checked and fiddled with the balance control suddenly I got FM reception but no AM. Does anyone have any ideas? I have already offended the Ebay seller as he swears it is a perfect specimen!

Attached are a photo and data plate

Sounds like the pots could be quite oxidized if things like the volume and reception are "scratchy" and erratic. I would use some DeoxIT per the can's instructions. Works wonders on older electronics. Or it could have just been jostled enough lately to loosen a solder joint or it's just tired after 30+ years and something finally failed. My Panasonic AM/FM from a 1980 HiLux finally quit working on the FM band.
If yours didn't include a faceplate, it likely came from another model. I don't think I've seen a FJ40 radio that had the knobs bisecting the face laterally. All the ones I've seen are below the horizontal center like the ones pictured.

I hoped the same thing last year. I didn't have a radio in my '78 FJ40 and couldn't see paying $200-$300 for a Corolla radio without a faceplate. I saw the RetroSound radio in a Google search and thought that might be the way to go so I ordered the Euro Mini faceplate (~$15 IIRC) to see. Very close but it was about 1/16" too wide. I have a miniature table saw for model building and cut 1/32" from either side of the center opening, superglued the pieces together, and epoxied small rods to the back for strength. I was going to paint the raised circumference white and order the RetroSound radio but found a '80 HiLux radio with faceplate in the meantime. If you want a modern radio that doesn't look out of place and doesn't require cutting the dash, the RetroSound might be the way to go.

Thanks unixman. I will give this a try. Can you give me further advice on the deoxIT product? I am not familiar. Also, when you say the "posts" are you referring to the tuning and volume posts that the knobs attach to? If so would you apply the DeoxIT product to these? I also wondered if some of this might be caused by old / bad condensers. The condensers on my vehicle are original.

Actually I said "pots" as in potentiometers but yes they are also the knob posts. DeoxIT will lubricate and clean the contacts and is made specifically for electronics. It may or may not help you. Whatever you do, don't spray WD40 or similar lubricant onto the radio posts. If that doesn't work I'd probably let an electronic repair shop give a repair estimate. If it's more than $200 or so I'd go this route.

Thanks for the clarification. I will give it a try and check the antenna ground ( I had the install an amplified antenna in the dash cap) and if this doesn't work I will bring it to a stereo repair shop.

Thanks for your comments and help.
