I hoped the same thing last year. I didn't have a radio in my '78 FJ40 and couldn't see paying $200-$300 for a Corolla radio without a faceplate. I saw the RetroSound radio in a Google search and thought that might be the way to go so I ordered the Euro Mini faceplate (~$15 IIRC) to see. Very close but it was about 1/16" too wide. I have a miniature table saw for model building and cut 1/32" from either side of the center opening, superglued the pieces together, and epoxied small rods to the back for strength. I was going to paint the raised circumference white and order the RetroSound radio but found a '80 HiLux radio with faceplate in the meantime. If you want a modern radio that doesn't look out of place and doesn't require cutting the dash, the RetroSound might be the way to go.I'm convinced that this radio would fit okay: http://www.retrosound.com/product-p/faceplates.htm You can pick any of the retro sound radios, the key is the Euro Mini face plate, I think that should fit a 40 perfectly, as I have linked. Someone needs to try it, because it looks like a nice option.
