I am attempting to figure out the routing and attachment points for a parking brake cable. I am installing a late model FJ40 rear axle - with the drum mounted parking brake mechanisms - under an Aqualu tub on a 78FJ40 frame... all with a floor mounted parking brake handle (not the under dash variety)

Pictures from a stock installation of all of this including the floor mechanism etc etc would be GREATLY appreciated...

Thanks,
Mark

I was hoping someone else would get them for you. I'm away until friday, so it'd be sat AM before I could shoot some pics.

Hey Mark,

Here we go, if it looks back-to-front just view them with a mirror - you all drive on the wrong side of the road over there

Running from front to back...more pics in the next post

From the underside of the bracket that bolts into the floor

Fits to the bracket on the cross-member just behind the gearbox

Another bracket fits to a cross member

And then to the top of the rear diff (looking from front to back)

Behind the rear diff, you'll see the cable "splits", with the one end going to the left wheel, and another to the right wheel. Also note the guide which bolts to the rear of the diff housing

THANKS!!!!

I have it attached to the drums abs the "back" of the axle. Now I see how it attaches to the to of the axle, the cross members and the fuel tank (I'll have to do something different there as this is a 78 and earlier Aqualu tub.

I'd like to see better how the cable goes up to the floor lever and where the lever is from the top side too...

THANKS!!!

Mark I Have a tub and frame from a 82. It still have the springs and rear axle attached. The cable is loose but I'll bet all the attachment points are still there. The cable is still attached to the axle. It attaches on the other side of the diff on LHD. Could get some pictures tonight.

That would be great! Thanks...

Hope its ok to hijack... I have the same cable routing for my rear diff drum handbrake. I have a dash mounted lever and so had my cable extended (was a tranmission mounted drum when the 4 speed was in). The issue i have now is that i cant get the brakes to lock up. Ive adjusted the drums out, adjusted the cable as well. When i pull the lever in i pull it as hard as i can and it doesnt lock engage the brake. If i pull it with all my might and 2 hands it only just makes the drums drag... So it seems that the leverage is nit enough with the dash mount lever.

My options seem to be installing a floor mount lever. My problem is that I have a 5 speed and so the gear levers are close to the front of the seat and I don't have room for the floor mount lever...

Any ideas?

Funny you ask... I STILL don't have shocks on my 40! Now that the Coal Mine Cruiser Classic is over (I'm one of the organizers) I'll have some time to get that wrapped up, I hope.

What is the issue you have seen with the shock mount? Is it different on the later axles?

Haha, how's the ride!?

Yea. The early housing had studs welded directly to the housing. The later axles do not. On those, the mount is on the ubolt plate (like in the pictures posted above by baas.) Also, I'm fairly certain the upper studs in the rear crossmember are spaced wider on the later rigs to accounts for the wider shock spacing.

I don't have the late model plates. I'm not opposed to welding studs or more traditional shock tabs to the housing, but the parking brake cable routing starts to be a factor in placement, likely one of the reasons Toyota moved the mount to the ubolt plate in the first place.

The easiest solution seems to be sourcing the late model plates and moving the top mounts. I wanted to flip my ubolts in the process, not sure if the stock plates will accommodate that.

The ride is fine... the springs are really too firm so it works ok on the street, for now.

I was planning a U bolt flip kit too. I need to look but I imagine the FJ40 kit I have will not have the lower stud for the shock, but it shouldn't be a big deal to weld one on. AND I imagine 4Plus/ Dave Gore (@lcwizard here on mud), the maker of the kit I have, could/would supply a kit with the stud if you ask... he is a great guy and a great resource.

He makes a nice kit, no doubt. I'll likely use one of his on the front. Still up in the air on the rear. With how low profile his plates are (a good thing) it will make a lower pin hard to come by. I may mock this up with the cable and weld the lower mounts to the housing like the early style.
