Moving right along. Blazer likes the new deck. Thought he’d be timid since its 10” higher than his normal perch but all it took was one Scooby snack to retrain him.

Next up is drawer faces and a sleeper. Anyone know why everyone uses piano hinges for sleepers? I’m thinking lift off gate hinges so I only take the sleeper when I need it.

Blazer approved build, I like it too!

Piano hinges have their place. For the door on my dog box on the back of the Northstar I used a SS piano hinge.

Because it is the right hinge for that application.

For a sleeping platform it would work well also. But that application is different and not written in stone. I don't see why a removable pin hinge (actually several of them) wouldn't work. Gate hinges are generally heavy but generally have a high working load. I don't know why either one wouldn't work if you wanted to remove the extra platform. And that idea really makes sense to me.

There are a number of people that have built platforms with other types of hinges besides piano. I think most people get stuck in a box on design without doing needs analysis being done, at all.

Hopefully the last bit of snow in the yard will be gone tomorrow and before long I can get started on mine. Bet at least once a day I keep changing the design. Good luck going down the hinge rabbit hole ;) But you will have what works for you when you are done, not something that someone else designed for everyone else.

Building this has been a long road but so excited about the added functionality. If I didn’t have to build and iterate, measure and wait for parts it would probably still take 3-4 days to build all this. If you have a cabinet maker build the boxes that would save a day. I just found out cabinets.com builds boxes like these for $150 each. Totally worth outsourcing that part but glad I did my own since it gave me a chance to learn how to use a router table from with my dad.

Going to need a shorter fridge and a fridge slide as well. Don’t get used to all that extra space, Blazer.

What's the depth measurement of the top of your platform? I am considering undeleting my second row and want to see if that's feasible or not without having to take everything apart and re mock it up.

What's the depth measurement
Platform top is 43”w X 36”d. I maximized the space so it’s about 5/8” away from my table folded up and maybe an 1/8” from the seat backs slid all the way back in the standard upright position. Its about 1/16 from touching the wheel well trim on either side. I’ll probably round off the edges with a router after I add the laminate Im planning on covering it with.

Thanks for taking the time to post that!

Turned out very nice IMO, important question is are YOU happy with it?

I have some bulk material from Tractor Interiors that should be here this week. And L Track from My Tee Products is in the garage. Was all set to rip everything on both sides out and go to the bottom, but I also have both pigtails from THEOZMAN. Now you have me thinking of keeping the passanger side wing for outlets that looks perfect great job. Back to the drawing board, will know for sure once I start ripping things out for sure.

are YOU happy with it?
I started the video on the drawer system build (editing now) with a comment that my wife told me to buy one because I’d redo it three times and not be happy. Then I joked that she was wrong because it was five and Im still not happy : )

I was wracking my brian on how to build a side wing that would hold my power setup in time for my trip this weekend when I realized how easy the third row seat side wings would convert into a power panel.

I just removed the carpeted top (a few screws) used a 3 hole power panel as the template and grabbed my hole drill. Super easy and has the added benefit of hiding the cabling in the area the harness lives anyway.

So just got done poking around your video again looking at how I plan\planned to do the sides. And noticed you have a parts list, I missed that before. Looks like we went down the same L Trac path, for some reason thought you were using US Cargo. I found Mytee on Amazon also but didn't want to order 2 kits just to get 3 pieces, I'm trying to get rid of build stuff not add to it ;). I ended up finding the Mytee products website and opened an account. Half the price of US Cargo which you probably already know. But cheaper direct from them instead of Amazon and can order exactly what you need instead of 2 kits.

Just in case for when you do version 2 LOL.

I'm going 3/4" europly for the base and L track on top of course. Instead of sandwiching 1/2" plywood between the tracks I have a bunch of heavy equipment\tractor floor mat left over from soundproofing the Ranger.

It is heavy (1 lb. sq. ft. mass loaded vinyl) with Abrasion Resistant Fiber Reinforced Top Coat and has held up well for 5 years but I'm tired of looking at the leftover roll in the spare bedroom. Should have just enough to use it up. There is a reason I keep stuff like that around LOL.

And it happens to be 1/2" thick.... I'll be watching for your next production video, thanks for the ideas!

I need one of those. My wife struggles to reach inside the fridge on the current slide out that I have

After spending a weekend with Jake and his family in Sedona, I can attest that it is a great looking drawer system and works great!
He did a very clean job, and the drawers do look like a finish carpenter made them, which I guess his dad did/does.
I love using T-slot extrusions and have used them on test fixtures for work. It truly is like a modern Erector Set of the next century!

Hey Jake, just thinking about the face plates you're planning on using for drawers, how about some faux carbon fiber plastic sheet? Cheap, light and will keep with your black-on-black theme.

Thanks, buddy! My dad was actually a civil engineer. He just got into woodworking when he retired, but yeah, he's got some skills.

I was thinking HDPE for the drawer faces. Carbon fiber could work, but isn't it a lot more expensive than HDPE? I'm planning on black for the drawer faces and grey for the laminate top to match my two-tone interior.

I was referring to just cheap plastic with a carbon fiber fascia on one side. Maybe 1/8" - 1/4" thick. Should be easy to find and not too much and easy to machine, er... cut and drill.
Not unless I had money to spill without missing it, would I consider any real carbon fiber products that wasn't performance related for weight and strength.

I really like this build and have watched the video probably a dozen times. I don’t want drawers, but I think this build could also be an awesome platform. Add two more cross supports in the front to match the ones in red in the rear and flip the entire thing upside down. Add 1/2” or 3/4” baltic birch on top and attach with L brackets fixed to the 80/20. Thoughts?

I know there are a few engineers here. I wonder if you could lose the 3 verticals in the center and still maintain solid carrying capacity on top. Max of ~500lbs? That would provide a wide open space below for larger items.
