Just looked at the FAQ on the Bezel issue. My '77 is completely stock(as far as I know) . The argument that the thick part goes on the top is not quite right - at least for this unit. You will note in the pic that the "Toyota" emblem is NOT centered if the bezel is as some would recommend. I don't know if the truck was modified when coming to this country, but this is what it is. My 40 shows almost 3/4" high from centered with the thick part on the top.

Believe it or not, there is a photograph, taken by Toyota Corp. themselves or someone representing the Toyota Company of an FJ40 coming down through a canyon, the picture is in one of their brochures or advertisements and yes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the bezel is upside down. It is the only time I had ever seen them make that rookie error. FJFJFJ

you do know, that in order to change a burnt out head light, the bezel needs to be removed from the truck right?

not actually Toyota...but...the company doing the photo shoot

they dont know any better :D

there are early sales videos showing the LC and one has an upside down bezel.... the problem is these advertisments and with photoshoots ...they were done thru the dealership network or individual dealers... not thru Toyota untill some time in the early 70's that ive found so far

the videos and sometimes even the literature use customer trucks ...and some are several years old... sealed beams get replaced and bezel goes on wrong as brian said :meh:

You might want to edit your post to show the picture that your refering to. How long ago did you buy your thirty-five year old truck? I purchased my 68 when it was six years old. The thick part was on the bottom but is also no longer had Koito head lights which would have been standard on the FJ40. As was posted already the bezel has to come off to replace a head light. So mine had been off at least once. I also question if your emblem location if it isn't centered with the thick part on top. It is much closer to center then with the thick part on the bottom when the TOYOTA is in the stock location.

If it is reported to have the Toyota emblem centered--go measure it--it does not center the emblem--at least on my 77.

This is the best original Toyota ad pic that I have found in which it clearly depicts the true orientation of the bezel. It clearly shows the thick horizontal part of the bezel to be on top. However. I still think it's a matter of choice which way you'll personally install your bezel.

I personally like the thick part on the bottom it appears to be more symmetrically fitting and grounded.

I was wondering this too! My hj47 is easy as it has guides that match up with the adjusting screws on the headlights... Fail proof!

Folks still manage to get the square bezels upside-down too

This is like the chicken and the egg. Which came first. In the case of the bezel and Toyota emblem is was clearing the bezel. And Toyota determined the thick part goes on top even before the emblem appeared in the grill. During 63 Toyota decided to stop stamping the grill with Land Cruiser and put Toyota in the grill. My opinion why is because around this time Toyota was about to give it a go again with a car line and wanted product recognition to be Toyota rather than Land Cruiser. It also stands out more in the grill then the bezel. But how Toyota wanted the bezel mounted is not a opinion but a fact.

No one is going to stop you, but you will be ridiculed each and every time you post a pic...

Proof that Toyota STILL thinks that the fat part should go on top.

Except that when one puts a '79-'84 bezel upside down it actually rubs the fenders because it narrows slightly at the bottom to fit. It too is slightly thicker 'at the top' of the bezel (1.25" at the top versus 15/16" at the bottom)- further proof, perhaps?

They should of just varied the hole pattern from top to bottom and none of this would have ever been an issue.
