I've wanted to run the Rubicon since before I could drive! Now that I have my 80 somewhat built up I think its time.
Just a few questions:

Never done anything this serious, maybe a few moderate trails around Reno, Death Valley, and across Nevada. Do I have anything to worry about? I don't mind "minor" body damage. Currently have flares and am thinking about de-flaring and rhino lining the lower part of the truck so damage there is a non issue.

Should I bring the wife? She likes camping and mild offroading but I'm afraid she might insist on walking up some of the more difficult spots.

Any other suggested mods? Definitely plan on sliders and possibly a few skid plates, but otherwise I think I should be covered. Only other concern is my winch...found out it was kind of weak after pulling my 100 out of a snow bank. Should have gone with the 9500...

Sounds fine. 80s do surprisingly well on the Rubicon. Sliders are pretty much mandatory, and a skid plate is not a bad idea either. Toyota's idea of a skid plate is kind of a joke.

Bring your wife. I've always made my son hop out and walk the dangerous spots too.

Your winch will be fine, you probably won't even need it.

IMHO sliders and a stout rear bumper are a must. I smacked my rear bumper almost as much if not more than my sliders.

Good to know. I still have a stock rear bumper. Can I run with it and just plan on replacing after? Then I can justify new rear w/a swing out carrier to the :princess: and get my spare 345 out of the trunk!

You probably want corner protection behind the rear tires. If you're planning to upgrade your bumper, I'd do it before and save yourself some body work.

Agree. The corners unfortunately get smacked.

Thanks guys, glad I asked. So my to do list:

1. Sign up for Rubithon 2014
2. rear bumper (DC fabrications is looking pretty sweet)
3. sliders (rocky road or white knuckle)
4. skid plates (slee?)
5. poss deflare...or let cadillac hill decide that one

Looking foward to June and wheeling with some fellow 80's. :steer:

I had a iron pig skid and actually never touched it. That doesn't mean that you won't, but i would not let the sliders and rear bumper get put to the side over a skid plate.

I personally would also take a spare drive shaft. Just in case you smack it. Take a spare birf if you have one... OR, take some cash! There are so many cruisers and so many cool folks with parts and are willing to help, i'm sure you could buy any broken part off another cruiser head.

Take a tube of FIPG and some extra gear oil, motor oil and PS fluid. I smacked my front diff on a rock and as i reversed it hung up on the rock and separated just enough that i had a nice front diff oil leak. I drained the oil out, splattered FIPG all over the leaking areas and then filled it back up. Good to go!

Don't worry about the flares. If they go, they go. If not, great job! :steer:

My flares were (mostly) long gone before Cadillac. My daughter giving me grief over the first one that went, and we hadn't even reached the Lake yet!

Glad you like it!

Any chance of you coming out again this year? I know it's a heck of a drive for you.

Just waiting to get my tax refund check, and I got the OK to buy a car hauler. Looks like some long distance trips will be in my future!

Stay warm my friend!

Or a short flight. I'm sure we can find a right seat for you. I can't offer mine until I'm sure Nick has a ride and I pass it by the ladies, but there's a good chance I'll have a spot for ya.

I would like to register for the Thursday run but noticed that run used to be led by Bill Jackson is no longer there. I would like to camp at Buck but the other 2 runs on Thursday are for TOTR and FJCruisers and I will be piloting a FJ40. Can anyone recommend a run? Thanks

If you can leave Wednesday, the Wagon run would be perfect. It would be good to see you again.

The Run is hosted by Toys on the Rocks and is open to all. It is the Breakfast Run that Bill Jackson led. Ice House resort had dropped breakfast, but now it is back. This is the run you want.

I picked up front and rear bumpers for my 62 from Luke at 4x4 Labs. Has some excellent items there and he's in Grass Valley. Great group there.

Had I been smart enough to not jump into the double locker run in 2013, I might have run the whole trail without needing lockers....but my sliders and bumpers got a workout :-)

The TOTR run is replacing the Bill Jackson run. Those guys have done an awesome job, but wanted a little break so they could just come in and enjoy for a few years. Pete Newell with Toys on the Rocks, led in the Tuesday from Loon run last year and did a spectacular job. He has stepped in and taken on the Thursday run. In addition, we are bringing back the breakfast at Ice House Resort. This run will be camping at Buck along with the FJC guys.

It is open to all types of vehicles. The only two runs that are vehicle specific are the FJC run and the Wednesday 40's only run from WWS with Mark Dunne.

Andy, are you actually recruiting now:grinpimp: And not even a wagon, no saying I have too many people this year;)
