Hey guys was just thinking maybe it’s time I start a thread for 1fz-fe I have been rebuilding and selling them for a while now and figured I should start documenting it in a thread. I usually buy motors from trucks with a blown head gasket, but sometimes buy whole trucks and rebuild them and reinstall. I am currently putting together a brand new OEM short block and have a rebuilt one I’m picking up from the machine shop. I will include part numbers and pictures of the work i am doing. Engines always get taken down to the bare block so pistons and crank come out block gets hot tanked and painted. Bored out if necessary which they usually need it even when the cross hatching is present do to light vertical scoring on the cylinder walls. I used OEM over sized .50mm pistons. New Toyota rings. I check the crank per fsm and replace all the bearings. I check the connecting rods per fsm and replace the bearings. I replace the thrust washers. The block gets decked for flatness. I have replaced the oil pump bushing but they are usually in awesome shape and don’t require it my machine shop uses non corrosive cleaner so it doesn’t effect the brass. Next I take the head all the way down and the machine shop decks the head for flatness. Three way Valve grind is done and new valve guide seals are installed. The valves are adjusted. On assembly I do all new timing components only OEM is used. New head gasket and ARP head studs. I use the opel kit 209-4702 and the Supra kit 203-4205 for the two front studs under the camshafts. I install new oil cooler cover. I have been reusing the harmonic balancer on my previous builds but will be buying new ones for future rebuilds. Oil pans get jet washed and reinstalled. New front and rear main seals and Valve cover gasket along with spark plug tub seals. I will be documenting this next reassembly with part numbers coming up. A couple porn pictures for you motor junkies.

B-E-A-utiful. 👍

Very nice. We build 3.8 Turbo Buick motors frequently and I have thought about building up an 1fZ-FE but due to the head length I cannot deck it with our mill. I am curious if you would sell a built up head. I am fond of Teflon coated piston skirts and EPC 104 Ceramic coat on the piston crowns. Anyone with a turbo equipped or soon to be equipped motor will appreciate the ceramic coating. With the inline design the Teflon coated skirts is probably not necessary but I will let you comment on skirt wear. @Fj80oregon What timing chain set up tool are you using and what kind of chain?

How many new short blocks have you bought from T so far? You singlehandedly may be keeping 11400-66041 alive!
I have only purchased one and that happened to be in stock at my local Toyota warehouse so I swooped it up. If they could provide me with an actual time frame i might be inclined to buy more. I enjoy bringing these abused ones back to life and it’s cheeper than a new short block. Now I am probable keeping the oversized pistons available I have bought 18 this year alone and last year 24.

If you need a head shoot me a PM. The skirt wear seems to be very minimal, obviously if debris gets in there it scores up the walls and skirts. Toyota stock pistons come with a coating on them from the factory. Most of the engine i have pulled apart have had minimal wear on the pistons and cross hatching still in awesome shape. I have only step honed and put standard size rings in one build so far. That truck did not have a blown motor when I got it and had been very well taken care of. The other ones I have had bored .50mm over because of scoring on the side walls or corrosion from water intrusion(blown head gasket). Not sure what you mean timing chain tool? I install all new sprockets, tensioner, and timing chain all from Toyota. Toyota makes it dummy proof and provides markings on the sprockets and chain to line up.

Always nice to see a fresh one, good inspiration. Pretty sure I'll be rebuilding mine next, looks as simple as any other Toyota at least. Done a few 22REs, a 3RZ, countless LS engines and most recently a Mercedes OM617. Only thing I'm concerned with on mine is the condition of the head, does your machine shop ever report issues with them when you send them out?
