I forgot to mention lol, to check for cracks around the freeze plugs. Now I can rest, I think lol.

I can highly recommend @Fj80oregon. I bought one of his rebuilds and it has been flawless since installed. Just 4000 miles on it so far, but not one issue has popped up. He also was just great to work with, great communication.
I will second Vegabond! I just got one of @Fj80oregon rebuilt engines too! I have about 300 miles on it so far in the last month and it has been awesome to feel the difference. Great communication from start to finish. Has been readily available to answer questions about “while you are in there stuff”, you name it. Easy from beginning to end. I’m really hoping that my core can be turned into a fully rebuilt engine that someone else can enjoy. 5 stars!

Its very clear based on numerous engine and headgasket threads that the block rarely need work. Factory hone marks still show. Mine at 245k miles still did. You can save money by refreshing head and timing chain. BTW the timing chain is a lifetime item. Slippers not so much in the earlier engines.

OP states the vehicle in question has "thrown a rod" so reusing the existing block might not be in the cards- I think that is why the discussion shifted to replacement blocks

Leaving this chat now. Ha!

Pretty easy if you have the space and tools. Just follow the FSM. Bear in mind some parts are NLA.

I too have a rebuilt 1FZ-FE from @Fj80oregon. Just got through the initial break in period. Loving it so far. It is a beautiful engine and is performing wonderfully.

If you are thinking about starting with a new short block, check out this build thread, which has to be one of the most satisfying threads in this forum and its full of great information (part's lists and numbers, etc.) on putting together a 1FZ-FE engine:
