I will second Vegabond! I just got one of @Fj80oregon rebuilt engines too! I have about 300 miles on it so far in the last month and it has been awesome to feel the difference. Great communication from start to finish. Has been readily available to answer questions about “while you are in there stuff”, you name it. Easy from beginning to end. I’m really hoping that my core can be turned into a fully rebuilt engine that someone else can enjoy. 5 stars!I can highly recommend @Fj80oregon. I bought one of his rebuilds and it has been flawless since installed. Just 4000 miles on it so far, but not one issue has popped up. He also was just great to work with, great communication.
OP states the vehicle in question has "thrown a rod" so reusing the existing block might not be in the cards- I think that is why the discussion shifted to replacement blocksIts very clear based on numerous engine and headgasket threads that the block rarely need work. Factory hone marks still show. Mine at 245k miles still did. You can save money by refreshing head and timing chain. BTW the timing chain is a lifetime item. Slippers not so much in the earlier engines.
Leaving this chat now. Ha!OP states the vehicle in question has "thrown a rod" so reusing the existing block might not be in the cards- I think that is why the discussion shifted to replacement blocks
I too have a rebuilt 1FZ-FE from @Fj80oregon. Just got through the initial break in period. Loving it so far. It is a beautiful engine and is performing wonderfully.
If you are thinking about starting with a new short block, check out this build thread, which has to be one of the most satisfying threads in this forum and its full of great information (part's lists and numbers, etc.) on putting together a 1FZ-FE engine:

1FZ-FE Engine Build
Hi Everyone, This is my first post on the forum here, I've been a fly on the wall for the past few years. I'm building a 1FZ-FE engine for my '97 LX450 and thought this would be a fun one to document. I'm doing this in my free time, so I'll be assembling little bits over the next few months...forum.ih8mud.com
