Prior experience is one of the reasons why I love this forum. :D

I'll take a crack at it again later tonight. Gotta take the munchkins to get holiday pictures done first. Thanks man!

I'd run a background on that Mall Santa if I were you. Just sayin'. :)

I always pull ID and clear him through channel 2.

Don't you?

I'd start higher on the force continuum. The red suit alone is PC, obviously concealing something.

Fuzz, I'm betting you don't have to pull that skid plate, but please, avoid the "easy out". I hate those things. I've busted a couple of them off trying to remove bolts and then you are skrewwedddd. If the bolt head is rounded off, try something like this:

Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more

Also, PB Blaster is your friend when trying to remove the sensors.

Oh trust me, I spent many years in the USAF using easy-outs on all manner of aircraft and support equipment. When they work, they are awesome. When they snap off in the fastener....:bang:

Plenty of PB on hand. That kit looks mighty neat though, especially for $15. I think it's time to source some new bolts for the underside of my rig and start replacing them.

Agreed. Intermediate weapon or less lethal? Yeah, less lethal.

I replaced the front two O2 sensors, cleaned the MAF & TB today. Initial results look good. Idle is smoother and scan gauge said 15.1 mpg average on the 30 min test drive! Hopefully no more 12.1 mpg tanks!

WOW!

Just got done doing both front sensors. All I can say is, whoever installed the last set of 02s on this rig deserves a high five. I didn't use a drop of PB blaster on either side. In fact, the hardest part of getting the job done was trying to get the friggin passenger side sensor plug unclipped! Holy crap was that a PITA. Other than that, 1/2  job in the garage. Here's what I used:

IMG_20111126_152811.jpg

Small flathead screwdriver (to separate the PS sensor plug)
Large 1/2" drive ratchet
1/2" drive to 1/4" driver conversion bit
1/4" drive Autocraft 02 sensor crowfoot socket (great investment for 13.99)

That crowfoot 02 sensor socket was a great purchase, took the job from  to 1/2  all by itself. The sensors broke loose right away, no huffing and puffing required other than a couple of choice words for the plug. I also can't get over how much the included anti-sieze resembles the copper goop that Glock puts on the frame rails of all of their new pistols....hmmmm.....

This has turned out to be an excellent day! Had a nice TG leftover lunch, got the 02's done, and best of all, Michigan beat Ohio State! I'm a happy camper today. :D

Now, fingers crossed on my mileage...

I let the car run for about 15 minutes at idle to let the computer "see" the new sensors. When I came back out, I noticed that the rich fuel smell was gone from the exhaust. I got excited for a second, then I realized that the rich fuel smell I had been smelling probably had nothing to do with the 02 sensors, and more to do with the car being cold upon startup and running purely in open loop until the sensors heated up. I'll let it cool down again and restart it later. I bet the rich fuel smell will be there again. We'll see.

Hopefully I'll still see some improvement.

Nice! Hopefully it will get you back into the 20's? Well. maybe the 14's anyway! Did you get those Denso's from Rock Auto?

Jeeze...20s....if only the LC would get the mileage my old honda did.

I got the sensors off of Amazon, and the price must have gone up a little since then because it was $95 total for both of them with free shipping...now it looks like it would be about $107 for both.

I took my Cruiser on a wheeling trip today (first trip after replacing my O2 sensors and cleaning my MAF, TB) Did about 30 miles off-road today. When I got back on the highway, I reset my scan gauge. The 100 mile hwy drive home averaged 17.5 mpg! The most I used to ever get was 14.5! I am not sure what in particular did it, but I'm a happy camper.

Do they put 10% ethanol in your gas? I noticed when they wer phasing that in year round in Denver that Ethanol fuel gave me about 10% less in MPG performance. Be nice to know if 17.5MPG was with Ethanol fuel or staright fuel:steer:

I know the correct part # for front O2 sensors is 234-4169.

I was wondering if part # 234-4209 is the exact same sensor, just without the wiring harness? This is the one Amazon lists as a "universal" sensor. I'm willing to splice the wires (probably solder and heat-shrink for longevity) and would rather save the ~$40 for two sensors. Anybody have a definitive answer on this?

I swapped out both of mine with new Densos and went from 14 mpg to less than 13 mpg! That wasn't supposed to happen. WTF?

Fuzz, did you ever get any changed mileage out of this deal? If so, was it worth it?

I just spoke to CDAN, and on my '06, changing out front and rear O2 sensors runs over $500 just in parts...I'll do it if necessary, but that's not a small cost.

Thanks,

I changed my fronts after starting this thread - went from 13.8 to 13.4 mpg!

I've actually been experiencing less mileage lately too, but alot of that probably has to do with extended warm up periods due to winter temps, and lots of snowy roads. I'm afraid I really won't get an accurate read on the numbers until spring.

Please don't pay for OEM sensors. Get the Denso ones off of Amazon for ~$60 each. Changing them out is so easy it should be a crime to charge labor to do it. Get a crowfoot 02 sensor socket from Advanced Auto for $14 and go to town. Easy Peasy.
