Separate of what I just said.

This being a “Nitro gear” thread. I’ve always regeared with Toyota gears in my constant drive axles.

This is the first set of Nitro Gears I’ve had and... umm... if I could do it again, I’d run Toyota 4.88s. These Nitro Gears are giving off far, far more metal than any of my much smaller Toyota 8” gears.
Does Toyota offer a 4.30 gear set? I don’t think I need 4.88

How's it going everyone? Had 4.88's Installed and about 250 miles Into break in. Only thing I've noticed thus far (besides immediate increase in mpg's) is the slightest/quietest high pitched whine that you can hear on deceleration. Almost like a tiny jet decelerating. Has anyone else experienced the same?

Not related but I’m in the research phase, what year is the cruiser?

I thought I had 4.88 whine and just accepted it as part of the build. A couple years <eek> later I exchanged the auto transmission fluid. Whine went away. Driving much quieter! Suggest before you get too concerned that you try a a/t transmission fluid service.

When I finally regeared (only recently in March)…one thing that noticeably changed was that my truck began automatically downshifting more effectively. -When it downshifts upon coasting downhill…(something I had forgotten it was capable of doing without my intervention)…I can now feel and hear it…whereas prior to the regear, it rately did—most likely because ratios were preventing tge system from adequately sensing/responding due to wonky ratios). I wonder if this might be at least part of what you’re noticing…?
Or…simply that the bormal effects of downshifting (without actually downshifting) are now more apparent…?

Yeah I hear ya man, I do t think the noise is due to the down shifting as it's a constant uninterrupted noise (no change in pitch of noise at downshift points) all the way down to about 5 mph. With the radio on you can't really hear it, but it's there

Some gears can whine.

My 4.88 gears made noise at first but that was due to the pinion not being tight. They are silent now.

Gear whine is a sign of something not being set up perfectly.

Is your rig heavy? What size tires are you running?i have not pulled the trigger yet.

Agreed with @linuxgod that it shouldn't be assumed gears should make noise. Noise and whine can be an indication of the gear teeth mesh not being setup well. There can be different types of noises depending on accel, decel, load, etc, that could help clue into how the mesh or bearings are an issue. Either way, it's not completely great and could ultimately manifest in premature wear or weakness in gear teeth.
